Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Huntsville Havoc opened their season with a bang Saturday night at the James Brown Arena defeating the Augusta RiverHawks 5-1 in the RiverHawks' second game. The fight-filled affair featured 149 penalty minutes split between the two teams.
The Havoc were dominant on the penalty kill, denying the RiverHawks on their ten chances with the man advantage. Key in killing those penalties was the play of goaltender Mark Sibbald who stopped 32 shots on his way to his first win of the season.
The RiverHawks were hampered by the loss of their Captain Matt Auffrey who was ejected from the game in the second period. After Havoc tough-guy Gabriel Boutin-Gagnon cross-checked RiverHawks forward Chris Doyle, Auffrey stepped in and engaged Boutin-Gagnon. The ensuring fight landed both players with fighting major penalties and game misconducts.
The Havoc jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals just over two minutes apart. First Brad Flynn walked out from behind the net and sent a shot over RiverHawks goaltender David Wilson's shoulder to open the scoring, followed by Brandon Richardson scoring his first of the night.
The second period was filled with fisticuffs, but it seemed like the RiverHawks were starting to take over the play, firing 13 shots at Sibbald and finally tallying a goal, as Jim Gehring pitchforked the puck in on a rebound off of a shot from Tyson Gimblett. The rally would not last long for the RiverHawks, as less than two minutes later Havoc forward Mike MacDonald would pick up a loose puck to the side of Wilson and fired it just underneath the crossbar to regain the Havoc's two-goal lead.
Any idea of a RiverHawks' comeback were squelched early in the third period when Richardson would score his second of the night just four minutes into the frame. Havoc defenseman Omar Pacha rifled home a one-timer from the blue line at the ten-minute mark to complete the scoring for the night.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration at the James Brown Arena Thursday, October 27th and Friday, October 28th with back-to-back games against the upstart Louisiana Ice Gators . The puck drops both nights at 7:35pm. Fans are encouraged to order tickets in advance by calling the RiverHawks' front office at 706 993 2645.
