Hartford, Delaware, Sacramento and Newport Beach Advance to WTT Finals
July 29, 2004 - World TeamTennis (WTT) News Release
The World TeamTennis Pro League season came to a close on July 25 and four teams advance to the WTT finals in August at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The win took nearly three hours and a Supertiebreaker, but the Hartford FoxForce rallied on the final night of the WTT Pro League regular season to capture their first WTT Eastern Conference Championship with an exciting 23-22 (7-2) Supertiebreaker win over the Newport Beach Breakers in Avon, Conn.
Needing a victory to win their conference and advance to the WTT Semifinal Playoffs, the FoxForce were in trouble going into the last match of the night, trailing the Breakers 19-14. After falling behind 0-3 in the final set, Hartford's Milagros Sequera charged back for a 5-3 singles win over Stephanie Hazlett of Newport Beach (Nana Miyagi substituted for Hazlett at 4-3). Sequera's singles victory sent the match into Overtime where she won three consecutive games to set up the 7-2 Supertiebreaker win.
Hartford's victory gave them the Eastern Conference title with a 9-5 regular season record. The Delaware Smash and the Philadelphia Freedoms both finished the regular season at 8-6, but based on Delaware's 3-0 head-to-head record against Philadelphia, the Smash will return to the WTT Semifinal Playoffs to defend their 2003 Championship title. Hartford and Delaware will battle on August 27 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The race wasn't nearly as close in the WTT Western Conference as perennial powerhouse Sacramento Capitals ran away with the Western Conference title with a league best 13-1 record and will face off against runner-up Newport Beach Breakers in the Western Conference Semifinals Playoff on August 27. The Breakers ended the season with an 8-6 record. During the season they handed the Capitals their only loss.
The winners of the two matches will play for the King Trophy during the WTT Finals on August 28.
