Harrisburg City Islanders Add Two Players in Hunt for Playoffs
July 18, 2012 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Harrisburg City Islanders have announced the addition of midfielders Greg Jordan and Jimmy McLaughlin to the fold for the remainder of the 2012 season.
Jordan, 22, was drafted 32nd overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the Islanders' MLS affiliate, the Philadelphia Union. The former NSCAA All-American starred at Creighton University from 2008 to 2011, helping the Blue Jays to a NCAA semifinal appearance in his last year with the team. After suffering a torn ACL in his sophomore season, the 6-foot Illinois native showed great durability in his following two seasons, starting 42 matches over that span.
McLaughlin, 19, was signed by the Union on December 11, 2011 as the club's second Homegrown Player. In his freshman and only season with Colgate University, he started all 22 games, a school record for a first-year player. A Union Academy graduate, McLaughlin also has experience with the MLS squad, seeing action against PDL affiliate Reading United, Barclays English Premier League club Everton and Spain's La Liga's Real Madrid last summer.
Playing mainly in a defensive role for his alma mater, Jordan will look to fulfill a similar role with the Islanders. McLaughlin has shown quickness and poise in the middle of the pitch and could be plugged in a number of spots by Harrisburg head coach Bill Becher.
Recent shoulder injuries to starting defensive backs Stephen Basso and Bilal Duckett have sidelined the pair and have depleted the Islanders' ranks in the backfield. Both Jordan and McLaughlin step in at a time when Harrisburg is looking to capture a playoff spot while dealing with some key injuries.
"We are excited to have Greg and Jimmy loaned to us for the remainder of our season," Becher said. "They have both played a couple of games with us and have fit in well. I think this will strengthen our team for the drive towards the playoffs."
The City Islanders' next home match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 when they welcome the Los Angeles Blues to Skyline Sports Complex. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 717-441-GOAL or visit www.cityislanders.org.
