Harlingen splits two games

HARLINGEN, Texas - Erik Moreno pitched a complete-game victory, the first pitcher to go the distance in the Texas Winter League, to lead the Harlingen WhiteWings to a 3-1 victory over the Brownsville Toros in the finale of a tripleheader Friday at Harlingen Field.

Moreno (2-0) allowed three hits and two walks, striking out four. The only run he allowed was unearned as he defeated the Toros for the second time in eight days.

Brownsville starter Carlos Tijerina retired the first nine batters he faced, but the Wings tied the game in the fourth inning. Bub Bergstrom manufactured a run with an infield single and stolen base, went to third on a groundout, then scored on a flyball to left field by Julian Williams. Bergstrom initially faked trying to tag up, but when Trey Fury's throw got away from catcher Kevin MacIlvane, Bergstrom dashed home to tie the score.

In the sixth inning, Kerry Reeves started the winning rally with a leadoff walk against reliever Courtney Delahoussaye (0-1). Reeves stole second and advanced to third when the pitch got past MacIlvane, who was standing up for a pitch out. Tim Ryan plated Reeves with a single up the first-base line, then Ryan Kottke's doubled scored Ryan with an insurance run.

In the second game of the day, the WhiteWings led 4-1 entering the seventh inning and appeared to have the game in hand with Brad Kirsch (0-1) on the mound for the save. But Laredo scratched for three runs to tie the game and another in the eighth to win it, 5-4, the first loss of the winter season for Harlingen.

Donnie Poles singled home the first run in the three-run seventh for Laredo. Greg Gallivan scored a run with a groundout, then an error by Candelario Perez allowed the tying run to score. In the eighth, another error by the WhiteWings - one of eight total in the two games - allowed what proved to be the winning run to score.

Jesus Garza (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings of relief to get the victory. He walked five, including two in the home half of the eighth as the WhiteWings loaded the bases. But he retired the dangerous Ryan Kottke on a flyball to right to end the game.

Another tripleheader is scheduled for today: Laredo plays Brownsville at 1 p.m., Brownsville plays Edinburg at 4 p.m., and Edinburg plays Harlingen at 7 p.m.
