Edinburg routes Laredo for first win

HARLINGEN, Texas - Eric Gonzalez had a pair of two-run singles in the fourth and fifth innings to lead the Edinburg Coyotes to a 12-1 victory over the Laredo Broncos in the first of three games Friday in the Texas Winter League.

Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two walks and a run scored. Catcher Charlie Weisser was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run triple in the third inning. The Coyotes scored five runs in the fourth inning and four in the fourth inning to get their first victory.

Edinburg starter Alan Bowen, a knuckleballer, pitched four scoreless innings to get the win. Bowen (1-0) scattered six hits, walked none and struck out six.

Laredo (1-3), which has lost three straight, received a good game from center Andrew Revall. He had two hits, including a triple in the fifth inning and scored the Broncos only run. Revall also make a good running catch in deep right-center.

Starter Jesse Hendriksen (0-1) took the loss for Laredo, allowing 12 runs (only five earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings.

The Texas Winter League is an extended tryout for high school and college players who were not drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs. A handful of players from last summer's United Baseball League are also participating. The four teams will play 24 games in 28 days.
