HARLINGEN, Texas - Ryan Kottke led a 10-hit attack with three hits and two RBIs to lead the Harlingen WhiteWings to a 10-4 victory over the Laredo Broncos in Texas Winter League action Thursday night at Harlingen Field.
The Wings (3-0) tagged Laredo starter Craig Pearson for six runs (four earned) on eight hits in 2.2 innings, including five runs in the third inning. Shortstop Candelario Perez - who is quickly making a name for himself after being scouted from Matamoros - went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Starter Todd Lutz (1-0) struck out three in three-plus innings, giving up two hits and two walks. Brad Kirsch and Andres Gutierrez went two innings apiece to close out the victory.
Jason Jennings and Joe Cuellar had two hits apiece in the losing cause for Laredo (1-2). Jennings doubled and scored twice. The Broncos defense didn't help their pitching staff by committing four errors.
To makeup for the rainouts earlier this week, there will be a tripleheader Friday: Edinburg vs. Laredo at 1 p.m., Laredo vs. Harlingen at 4 p.m., and Brownsville vs. Harlingen at 7 p.m. One ticket allows fans to watch all three games.
The Texas Winter League is an extended tryout for high school and college players who were not drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs. A handful of players from last summer's United Baseball League are also participating. The four teams will play 24 games in 28 days.
