
Brownsville tops Edinburg in opener

HARLINGEN, Texas - Adam Cox and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout to lead the Brownsville Toros to a 2-0 victory over the Edinburg Coyotes in the Texas Winter League. It was the first game since Saturday, as rain washed out both games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Cox (1-0) allowed two hits, walked three sand struck out four. Damon Miller pitched 1.1 innings, Jason Fulcher worked a scoreless sixth, and Jason Moody recorded the save with a scoreless seventh.
The pitchers were aided by center fielder Royce Dickerson's strong throwing arm. Dickerson threw out Marshall Deal at the plate in the second inning and right fielder Julian Williams at the plate in the fifth inning.
Brian Spottsville singled off Edinburg starter Charlie Ibarra (0-1) and scored in the first inning on a run-scoring single to left by Kevin MacIlvane. In the fifth, Trey Fury's infield single with the bases loaded scored and insurance run off Deal.
April Carmona made history in the game as the first female public address announcer in United Baseball League history.
To makeup for the rainouts earlier this week, there will be a tripleheader Friday: Edinburg vs. Laredo at 1 p.m., Laredo vs. Harlingen at 4 p.m., and Brownsville vs. Harlingen at 7 p.m. One ticket allows fans to watch all three games.
The Texas Winter League is an extended tryout for high school and college players who were not drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs. A handful of players from last summer's United Baseball League are also participating. The four teams will play 24 games in 28 days.
