Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release

Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC officially announced today the trade of defender Ashani Fairclough in exchange for forward Qudus Lawal from Seattle Sounders FC 2.

"Ashani has been a big part of our club and it is certainly with a heavy heart that we wish him well," said Wilmington Hammerheads FC General Manager Jason Arnold. "We are confident this is a positive move for him and our club."

Fairclough recorded a total of eight appearances with the Hammerheads this season, notching two goals overall. Before making the move to Wilmington prior to the start of the 2013 USL regular season, Fairclough was signed by Seattle Sounders FC where he logged four appearances in the MLS Reserve League.

"Ashani is a player that we know well, and if we had S2 a couple of years ago, he would probably still be with the club," said Seattle Sounders FC 2 Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson. "Everyone knows his quality, and although a few small injuries cost him playing time in Wilmington, he is a young player with great physical ability and a lot of upside. We are excited to have him."

Lawal has scored two goals and assisted one in his 11 appearances for S2. The 19 year-old Nigerian forward was a standout at the Sounders FC 2 Las Vegas Open Tryout held in December. He previously spent the 2014 season with the Chicago Fire Reserves in the Premier Development League.

"We welcome Qudus and are very excited to get him acclimated to our club and community," said Arnold. "We believe he will provide us with a strong offensive spark and we look forward to his success with us here in Wilmington."

Seattle Sounders FC 2 travels to face Real Salt Lake in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round on Tuesday, June 16. Fairclough is ineligible to play with S2 in the tournament due to being cup-tied with Wilmington.
