The Hammerheads come into the second round versus Cal FC - coached by former U.S. national team member Eric Wynalda whom is widely known among soccer fans as scoring the first goal ever in Major League Soccer for the San Jose Clash in 1996 and being the all-time leading goal-scorer for the national team up until 2008.
If the Wilmington Hammerheads win the second round match versus Cal FC they will be given the opportunity to play Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers on Tuesday, May 29.
It is known that the Hammerheads have a history playing in the U.S. Open Cup. In 2011 the Hammerheads beat the Central Florida Kraze 4-nil in the first round and advanced to the second round beating the Charlotte Eagles 3-2. They then traveled to Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah to face MLS's Real Salt Lake in the third round unfortunately losing 2-0.
"It is important to continue on throughout the U.S. Open Cup," said Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. "We've reached the quarterfinals in the past and it would be a heck of an achievement as a team and as an organization to surpass that."
One set back the Wilmington Hammerheads will face in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 22 is the one game barred Paul Nicholson. The Hammerheads midfielder will have to serve a suspension from a third yellow card he received in last year's third round of the U.S. Open Cup during tournament play.
