Hammerheads Face Independence for First Time this Season
May 8, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - The Wilmington Hammerheads kick off a busy week starting with a match against Charlotte Independence on Tuesday, May 10th.
For the first time this season, the Hammerheads will face Independence at Legion Stadium for the 8th game of the 2016 USL season.
Sitting in ninth place after their unfortunate loss against Richmond on Saturday, May 7th, the Hammerheads have little time to bounce back before heading into a three-home game stretch from May 10th until the 21st. Head coach Mark Briggs elaborated, "Charlotte has a great run of form thus far. The game will be difficult, as I expect charlotte to be competing at the end of the season."
Although the Hammerheads lost a close match against Richmond Saturday, they are prepared and looking forward to perfecting their offensive push for the second round of the Southern Derby Cup.
May 10th will be the third game in the Southern Derby Cup between the Hammerheads, Charleston Battery, Charlotte Independence, and Richmond Kickers. Launched in 2000, the Southern Derby was created by the fans of the teams involved to promote a friendly competition and rivalry along the clubs involved and encourages fans to travel to away matches. The Southern Derby is perhaps the first cup competition of its kind in American professional soccer. The Hammerheads were an exciting addition to the competition in 2011 and aim to win the cup this year.
