Hamm Leads Freedom Past Power, 4-1
June 29, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
UNIONDALE, NY - Tying a club record for goals scored in a game, the Washington Freedom (5-5-3, 18 pts.) defeated the New York Power (2-10-1, 7 pts.) 4-1 on Saturday evening at the Michel Athletic Complex. Mia Hamm led the way for the Freedom, scoring two goals on the night after coming off the bench to start the second half.
Washington made the score 1-0 in the 30th minute when Skylar Little found the back of the net for her first career goal. Bai Jie switched the field of attack with a pass to an unmarked Little on the right side of the pitch. The Freedom forward brought the ball in on net and beat New York 'keeper Gao Hong with a shot to the lower left corner. Both Bai and Steffi Jones were credited with assists on the play. The assist for Jones was her first career point in the WUSA.
Anne Makinen extended Washington's lead in the 38th minute. On a free kick from 40 yards out, the Finnish international sent a shot into the area. Gao came off her line to punch the ball away. The Power goalkeeper misplayed the shot, resulting in Makinen's second goal of the season. The free kick was the result of New York's Justi Baumgardt fouling Washington's Jones.
Washington goalkeeper Siri Mullinix came out of the match at halftime after suffering an injury to her left hand while making a save in the first half. Erin Fahey came in to begin the second half, making her second appearance of the 2002 season.
Recording three shots during the 62nd minute, Hamm gave Washington a 3-0 lead with her third goal of the season. The Freedom forward took a shot that was punched away by New York's goalkeeper. Hamm then headed the punched ball on net, requiring Gao to make a second save. However, Gao was unable to corral the ball. With a loose ball in the six-yard box, the persistent Hamm then ran onto the ball, pushing it over the line with her left foot for the score.
New York got on the board in the 66th minute. Coming off the bench, Tammy Pearman netted her first goal of the 2002 season. Tiffeny Milbrett sent a through pass to a streaking Pearman down the left side of the field. On the breakaway, Pearman slotted the ball to the right of Fahey to cut into the Freedom's lead 3-1.
Hamm scored her second goal of the night in the 90th minute to give Washington a 4-1 lead. From just outside the area on the left side of the field, Hamm curled a shot with her left foot over the head of Gao, finding the upper-right ninety for the score. Jacqui Little and Tracey Milburn (both second half substitutes) were credited with assists on the goal.
The four goals registered by the Freedom ties the team record for goals scored in a game (June 15, 2002 vs. San Diego, 4-0).
New York's Charlie Duccilli made his WUSA Head Coaching debut in the 4-1 loss.
