Hamilton Nationals Fall to Cannons

The Hamilton Nationals dropped an 18-9 decision to the Boston Cannons tonight at Harvard Stadium. The Nats fell to 0-2 with their second straight road loss, while Boston improved to 3-0.

The contest was a rematch of the 2011 MLL Finals, which was won by the Cannons, 10-9.

Hamilton was led by four points from Kevin Crowley (3+1) and two goals from Jeremy Thompson. Both players recently joined the Nationals from their NLL teams. Goalies Scott Rodgers and Brett Queener split time in goal and each made seven saves.

Boston got five-point efforts from Paul Rabil (2+3) and Ryan Boyle (3+2). Mike Stone and Kevin Buchanan also added three-goal nights. In goal, Jordan Burke made nine saves with seven coming in the first half.

The Cannons blew open the game in the fourth quarter with a 7-1 final 15 minutes. The Nationals had clawed back to within two on goals by Dan Deckelbaum and Thompson. Yet, the fourth belonged to Boston as it scored five goals in the first 7:07. Stone hit 45 seconds in for an 11-8 lead. Later, Bill McGlone and Chris Eck scored goal 27 second apart to make it 13-8. Poskay and Kyle Sweeney followed before Adam Jones scored his first MLL goal. With the score 13-9, Buchanan and Rabil finished the scoring for the Cannons.

To start the game, Boston and Hamilton traded goals for a 2-2 tie. The Cannons, however, netted three straight goals to end the first quarter, as Boyle, Matt Poskay and Rabil scored for a 5-2 lead. The Nationals reduced the deficit to one on goals 49 seconds apart from Crowley and Thompson. Boston was able to regroup again and rally with a 3-0 run, as Boyle, Stone and Buchanan scored to make it 8-4. Crowley notched his third of the game at 13:36 to send the Nationals into halftime down 8-5.

Hamilton makes its home debut on Friday, May 18th with an 11:00 a.m. contest against the Chesapeake Bayhawks at Ron Joyce Stadium at McMaster University. The Nationals will host over 1,700 kids from the Pen Pal Program at the game. For ticket information, contact the Nationals Ticket Office at (905) 768-2225.
