San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls, who begin the season with a record-long seven-game road trip, suffered two tough one-goal defeats Friday and Saturday to the highly touted Alaska Aces. San Diego will look to get in the win column Monday night when the two meet again in Anchorage.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Oct. 21 @ Alaska:

Barrett Heisten and Chris Minard connected on both Alaska goals, leading the Aces to a tight 2-1 victory in the season opener. Alaska quickly got on the board 38 seconds into the game before the Gulls' Steve Hildenbrand tied it early in the second period. Minard however gave the Aces the lead for good late in the middle frame.

Oct. 22 @ Alaska:

Mike Scott tallied twice and added an assist, lifting the Aces to their second straight victory over San Diego, 4-3. The second period was the story, as Alaska tallied three times, all involving Scott. The Gulls at one point tied the game, 2-2, but Scott and company proved to be too much. It was 2-0 early in the second before Pierre-Luc Sleigher and Jesse Bennefield notched back-to-back goals. Scott netted the game winner, however, 21 seconds after the Gulls tied it.

Individual Notes:

Hildenbrand and Bennefield each tallied a point in San Diego's first two games (1g, 1a)... Tomas Slovak picked up two assists Saturday... Goaltender Tom Lawson didn't make the trip to Alaska, staying with his wife for impending childbirth... Cody McLeod was recalled to the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters due to issues with his immigration paperwork... Team Notes:

The Gulls are now 1-2-0 all-time in ECHL season openers (7-4-0 including WCHL play)... This is the first time San Diego has ever started a season with two straight losses (including WCHL play)... Their seven-game road trip is the longest in club history to start a season... The Gulls are now 3-6-3 in their last 12 games at Sullivan Arena and 29-17-6 all-time in Anchorage...

San Diego concludes its three-game set in Alaska Monday, with game-time scheduled for 8:15 p.m. (PDT). The Gulls' seven-game road trip to start the 2005-06 campaign continues with a pair of games Friday and Saturday against the Phoenix Roadrunners. The Blue and Orange open the home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Stockton Thunder. Gulls hats and magnetic schedules, presented by the Window Factory, will be given to the first 10,000 fans in attendance. The Home Opener will also feature the sixth annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by the San Diego School's Police Department and benefiting Children's Hospital. All fans are invited to throw a stuffed toy onto the ice after the Gulls score their first goal.
