San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â San Diego Gulls head coach Martin St. Amour announced today the protected list for the 2004-05 season. Among the players protected are Greg Barber, Dan Cousineau, Kevin Grant, Nick Lent, Eric Skaug and Billy Tibbetts.
On Friday, May 28, each ECHL team submitted a list of players to which the individual team holds the rights. As per league policy, teams will be able to protect up to eight players by extending a qualifying offer no later than July 1. Players will have until Aug. 1 to accept a qualifying offer.
Teams are not required to protect players who have signed a contract prior to July 1. No more than four of the players protected can be veterans (players who have played in more than 288 professional games). Players who are not signed or protected by July 1 will become unrestricted free agents.
A non-veteran player that does not accept the qualifying offer will have his rights retained by the extending team for one full playing season. If a player who has received a qualifying offer elects to sign with the team after Aug. 1, the original qualifying offer is null and void and the team may sign the player for any amount they agree upon. If a veteran player turns down a team's qualifying offer and is offered a contract by another ECHL team, the original team will have until Aug. 31 to match the offer. A veteran player who chooses not to accept a qualifying offer and who does sign an offer sheet will become an unrestricted free agent on September 1.
By 3 p.m. ET on Friday, June 4, ECHL teams must submit their season-ending rosters of up to 20 players. Season-ending rosters may not include players who were under contract to teams in either the National Hockey League or the American Hockey League prior to the opening of the 2003-04 ECHL season.
St. Amour protected six players: Barber, Cousineau, Grant, Lent, Skaug and Tibbetts.
Barber was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team in 2003-04 and was San Diego's lone all-star representative. He ranked second among all ECHL rookies with 76 points and 46 assists, while tying for second with 30 goals.
Cousineau, now a veteran, finished his second campaign with the Blue and Orange with 16 points (4g, 12a) in 57 games. Veteran defenseman Grant, also playing in his sophomore season with the Gulls, finished with 28 points (7g, 21a) in 38 games. Tibbetts, now a veteran, accumulated 53 points (18g, 35a) in 40 games while rookie Skaug notched 10 points (1g, 9a) in 71 games. Lent played in three playoff games with the Gulls, scoring two points (1g, 1a).
The Gulls begin their second season in the ECHL Friday, Oct. 22 in Long Beach against the Ice Dogs. San Diego opens its home schedule Saturday, Oct. 23 against the Fresno Falcons. For information on season ticket packages and benefits, contact 619-224-GOAL.
