NEWPORT, R.I. - The application window to join the Newport Gulls baseball club as a 2017 intern is now open via the team's official website, www.newportgulls.com.
The Gulls internship program is widely regarded across the country for providing exciting opportunities to college students and recent graduates to learn what it takes to operate the nation's premier summer collegiate baseball team. Interns in a variety of team departments - including baseball and game day operations, broadcast operations and media relations, marketing, and public relations - learn to work together over the course of the summer season to operate every aspect of the organization, all while managing game nights in front of thousands of fans at historic Cardines Field.
Countless Gulls interns have used their experiences with the team to find success in their fields of choice, including starting careers with organizations such as the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, Providence Bruins, and Pawtucket Red Sox, among many others.
The Gulls internship program has expanded over the years to welcome applicants looking to hone a variety of skills while managing the team's summer operations in a fun, challenging, fast-paced environment. Summer internships run from late May until mid-August, and interns are expected to attend all of the team's home games, in addition to maintaining regular office hours in accordance with their area of responsibility.
The team's baseball operations and game day operations departments feature a wide variety of opportunities, including running ballpark operations, coordinating the team's mascots, managing security and gate volunteers, planning pregame ceremonies, running contests and in-between innings games, and handling ticket operations. Interns often learn and take on a variety of different roles and leadership opportunities over the course of the summer season, cross-training in numerous areas.
The Gulls media operations department has set the standard for summer collegiate baseball broadcasts nationally, and includes on-air broadcast roles as play-by-play announcer and field reporter. Writing opportunities are available, including managing website content, writing game notes, feature stories, and game recaps, and running the team's popular social media accounts. Opportunities are also open to be the team's 2017 official scorer, or work in the broadcast production staff as a producer, camera operator, photographer, or videographer.
Marketing opportunities include graphic design, sponsor relations, coordinating ticket fundraising efforts with local non-profits, community relations, and directing the team's popular summer camp program. Game night roles include fan entertainment and hosting pregame ceremonies, among other opportunities.
The Gulls also offer specialized internships working in the dugout with the team's medical staff as an assistant to the trainer.
Additional internship opportunities are also available over the winter and spring as a baseball operations assistant, media relations assistant/writer, or marketing assistant. All Gulls internships are available for academic credit; interns are volunteers, and are responsible for their own housing arrangements. Meals are provided at all home games, in addition to team apparel and other special opportunities.
