
Gruden Leads AFL Players of the Week

NEW YORK â Orlando Predators quarterback JAY GRUDEN, Buffalo Destroyers defensive specialist DWAINE CARPENTER and Arizona Rattlers wide receiver/defensive back RANDY GATEWOOD have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 2 of the 2003 season.
Gruden (6-1, 200, Louisville), in his eighth AFL season, connected on 24-of-41 passes for 330 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions on Sunday. Four of his scoring strikes were delivered to wide receiver/linebacker CORY FLEMING in the Predators 54-51 Southern Division victory over rival Tampa Bay. The former Cardinal has thrown 12 touchdowns and no interceptions in two games this season. This marks the eighth time Gruden has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Carpenter (6-2, 215, North Carolina A&T), a second-year defensive specialist, led one of the AFL's top defensive units by recording 3.5 total tackles, an interception and breaking up four other passes in the Destroyers' 44-16 victory over the Carolina Cobras on Sunday. The Destroyers allowed a season-low 16 points, while giving up 170 yards. This marks the second time that the former Aggie has garnered an AFL weekly honor.
Gatewood (6-0, 185, UNLV), a former All-Arena performer, led the Rattlers on both sides of the ball during Arizona's 46-42 victory over the Las Vegas Gladiators on Sunday. The former Running Rebel recorded three receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown and also had two interceptions â including a 47-yard return for a touchdown â and two solo tackles on defense. This marks the third time that Gatewood has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Chris Hixson, Colorado's John Dutton, Dallas' Andy McCullough, Grand Rapids' Clint Dolezel, Indiana's Raymond Philyaw and Los Angeles' Greg Hopkins.
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Randy Gatewood, Colorado's Charlie Davidson, Dallas' Tom Briggs, Detroit's Ron Carpenter, Indiana's Donnie Caldwell and San Jose's Clevan Thomas.
Ironman of the Week candidates included: Buffalo's Cornelius White, Colorado's Charlie Davidson, Detroit's Andy Shell, Grand Rapids' Chris Ryan, Indiana's Hugh Hunter, Los Angeles' Mathias Vavao, New York's Mike Furrey, Orlando's Cory Fleming and Tampa Bay's Troy Wilson.
