Newfoundland Growlers News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Newfoundland Growlers basketball club is proud to announce its inaugural selections in the 2022 U SPORTS Draft ahead of the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League season.
Representatives of all 10 CEBL clubs made their selections through a virtual platform and the order of selection was based on the order of the official launch dates of the three new expansion teams followed by the reverse order of finish in the 2021 regular-season standings.
With their first selection, third overall, the Growlers are proud to select St. John's native Cole Long from the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Long, a 6-7 guard, is a graduate of Booth Memorial High School in St. John's. He started 16 contests for the Seahawks during his senior year in 2021-22 and averaged 19.8 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.
On October 15 against the St. Mary's Huskie, Long recorded a career night, setting personal bests in points (37) and rebounds (20) in helping the Seahawks to an 83-69 victory.
With their second selection, 18th overall, the Growlers are proud to select Mason Bourcier from the Trinity Western University Spartans.
A 6-4, 200-lb guard from Kelowna, British Columbia, Bourcier averaged 16.1 points per game to go along with 9.6 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game.
On March 7, 2022, Bourcier was named Spartan Male Athlete of the Week after posting three consecutive triple-doubles during the Spartans' run through the Canada West playoffs.
Prior to joining the Spartans, Bourcier played two seasons with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in 2017-18 and 2018-19, appearing in 68 contests, averaging 8.3 points with 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
Draft eligible U SPORTS players may have completed their university eligibility in 2020-21, or they may be returning to their university team in the fall and be classified within the CEBL's U SPORTS Developmental player program. They must qualify as Canadian, and they must have completed at least one full year of eligibility at their U SPORTS institution.
