Gateway Grizzlies News Release
EVANSVILLE, IND. - The Gateway Grizzlies were swept by the Evansville Otters in their doubleheader on Thursday night at Bosse Field, falling 3-2 in both contests to lose their eighth and ninth consecutive road games.
The Grizzlies wasted no time getting their first lead at Bosse Field in 2026 in Game 1, scoring a first-inning run on an Abdiel Diaz infield RBI single off the glove of Garret Simpson. They then small-balled their way to another run in the top of the second, taking advantage of back-to-back walks to begin the inning. Victor Castillo moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, allowing Dale Thomas to drive a run in with an RBI groundout for a 2-0 advantage after two frames.
The Otters then tied it up at 2-2 against Ty Good in the third inning, cashing in a leadoff walk with a two-run home run by T.J. Salvaggio. It was the only hit Good allowed, finishing with eight strikeouts in four innings.
The offense for both sides stalled following the equalizing homer, and the game went to extra innings. The Grizzlies failed to score with the International Tiebreaker in effect in the top of the eighth, and Evansville walked off in the bottom half on Amani Jones' single to the left field corner.
Despite a lot of traffic on the bases for both sides, the scoring didn't start until the bottom of the third in Game 2. Logan Brown doubled down the right field line to score the nightcap's first run against Gateway starter Ben Harris, but the Grizzlies starter was able to limit the damage against him, keeping his team in the game.
The Grizzlies were unable to get on the board until the top of the fifth inning- Castillo notched his third hit of the game with one out, setting the table for Thomas to blast a go-ahead two-run bomb out to left field for a 2-1 lead. But it ended up being the second lead of the night that the Grizzlies couldn't hold on to as the Otters stormed back in the bottom of the sixth. Evansville tied the game at 2-2 on a passed ball before taking the lead on a Jon Ponder sacrifice fly against Jake Bockenstedt (0-1).
Junior Cerda recorded the save in the seventh to end the 3-2 loss, sealing a sweep at the hands of the Otters and a 3-9 season series against Evansville overall, including an 0-6 mark on the road.
Now having lost four in a row overall and five of their last six, Gateway will try to end their slide on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. CT when they host the Ottawa Titans at Arsenal BG Ballpark.
