Grizzlies Lose Second Straight to Evansville
July 2, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies got a strong start on the mound from Justin Ferrell and pitched well overall, but mustered just one run of offense in losing to the Evansville Otters 3-1 at GCS Credit Union Ballpark on Saturday night.
Evansville scored first the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Elijah MacNamee for a 1-0 lead. But the Grizzlies quickly responded in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Trevor Achenbach reached on an error, and two batters later, Cesar Trejo drove him in on an RBI single scoring Achenbach to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
However, the Otters wasted no time getting the lead back in the top of the fourth inning when Jeffrey Baez led off with a solo home run to make it 2-1 Evansville. Later in the top of the sixth inning, Evansville added an RBI double by Andy Armstrong to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
The score stayed that way into the bottom of the ninth inning where, after a brief rain delay, Otters' closer Logan Sawyer earned his league-leading 13th save to secure the win for Evansville, dropping Gateway to 1-7 against their West Division rivals this season.
The Grizzlies will look to salvage the final two games in their Fourth-of-July weekend series against the Otters starting with game three on Sunday night at 6:45 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark, when Carson LaRue will make the start for Gateway against Justin Watland for Evansville.
