Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Urbandale (IA) Veterans and rookies alike braved through humid conditions on Friday at Buccaneer Arena as all seek a roster spot on Des Moines' 2011-2012 United States Hockey League roster. With each team playing in two games that started as early as 8:30am, it was a test of endurance and nerves as opportunities to impress coaches become fewer and fewer.
The opener of the night session featured a 3-1 win for the Grey team over the Green team. Newcomers Ben Israel, Chase Rey and Jordan Boucher-Gould potted goals and returning goalie Tyler Bruggeman had a perfect second half to lead to the Grey victory. It was a game that also featured the first fisticuffs of the weekend when returner Kevin Irwin dropped gloves with rookie Curt Rau, who is the younger brother of former Buc Chad Rau.
The White squad built an early lead and went onto a 5-2 victory over the Blue team in the nightcap. Five different goal scorers lit the lamp for White in a game that featured a camp high four fights. Returner Logan Nelson scored a goal for White and goalie Christian Frey had a perfect first half.
The Red team was idle in the night sessions, having played twice earlier in the day.
Tryout camp continues on Saturday with the highly anticipated arrival of Mario Lucia who will suit up for the Grey team at 8:30am and 12:30pm. Following the 12:30pm game, the coaching staff will announced the rosters for the All-Star Games which will take place tomorrow night at 7pm and Sunday morning at 10am.
The Des Moines Buccaneers will be playing their 32nd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League beginning in the Fall of 2011. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
