GREENEVILLE, TN - Greeneville Astros right-handed pitcher Andrew Thome, who was called up to Class A Quad Cities Monday morning, has been named the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week by MiLB.com for the week of August 24-August 30. Over two games with one start during that span, Thome went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA over nine innings while allowing just six hits and picking up seven strikeouts.
The honor for Thome marks a team-record fourth weekly league award for the Astros this season following earlier player of the week recognition for first baseman Connor Goedert (June 29-July 5), outfielder Hector Roa (July 6-12) and pitcher Ryan Deemes (July 20-26). The previous mark of three such awards in a single season came in 2004, when future major leaguer Juan Gutierrez was recognized as pitcher of the week on three separate occasions.
Overall, it is the tenth time in club history the Astros have earned league pitcher of the week honors. Before Thome and Deemes this season, the last time the Astros had a pitcher of the week was the final week of the 2014 season when Brock Dykxhoorn picked up the award one week after Harold Arauz, giving the Astros the honor in consecutive weeks to close the season.
Thome was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of North Dakota and assigned to Greeneville on July 3rd. Since that time, the 22-year-old Minnesotan is 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA over 11 appearances including four starts. He has pitched a total of 31.0 innings and surrendered just three earned runs and one walk while striking out 19 opposing batters.
