Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, Mich. - The Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League announce that they will celebrate home opening weekend and the return of old school hockey with a visit on Sunday, October 28 from legendary Detroit Red Wing and Hockey Hall of Fame member Gordie Howe.
Port Huron holds the distinction of being Howe's first stop on an 80-city tour to promote his new book, Nine: A Salute to Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe. The book recounts Howe's 26-year career in the National Hockey League with hundreds of never before seen photographs and interviews with more than 80 members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
An exclusive luncheon with the hockey legend is set for 12:30 p.m. on October 28 at the Fogcutter Restaurant in Port Huron. The event includes your choice of entrees and a question and answer session. Tickets are $100 and include an autographed copy of Nine. Reservations can be made at the Icehawks office, 325 Huron Ave., Port Huron or by calling 810-966-3800.
"We are extremely honored to welcome Gordie Howe to Port Huron," Icehawks president and owner Larry W. Kinney said. "Mr. Howe is the best example of class and professionalism in hockey, and it is what we aspire to be at an organization. Having him here and involved in Icehawks hockey means so much to me personally, for our organization, for the team and for our fans."
Mr. Hockey will also sign copies of Nine from 2 p.m.-3 p.m. at McMorran Arena. He will not sign any other memorabilia during this time. Fans interested in purchasing autographed books can pick them up the day of the event or in advance at the Icehawks offices for $70.
Following the signing, Howe will drop the ceremonial first puck as the Icehawks take on the Bloomington Prairie Thunder.
Howe established himself as the face of hockey after an illustrious career with the Detroit Red Wings that spanned from 1946-1971 and included four Stanley Cups, six Hart Trophies, and six scoring titles.
Howe was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972. He then returned to hockey after a short break to play with his sons with the WHA and the WHL. He retired with a number of NHL records, including 801 goals, 1,049 assists and 1,850 points.
The Icehawks home opener is set for Saturday, October 27 with the Flint Generals.
