
Gonzalez Named All-Star Replacement

ATLANTA (Friday, June 13, 2003) - The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) today announced that Boston Breakers defender Monica Gonzalez will replace All-Star Starter Sissi (World Stars), as the Brazilian midfielder will not play due to a separated rib. The 2003 Hyundai WUSA All-Star Game will be televised on ESPN2 on Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET at SAS.
Gonzalez, a second-year starter for Boston, has played in eight matches during the 2003 season, scoring a goal and two assists for a total of four points. The 5-foot-10 defender is a member of the Mexican national team and appeared in the 1999 Women's World Cup. The University of Notre Dame product has 29 caps during her international career. Selected 11th overall in the 2002 WUSA Draft, Gonzalez played both defensive midfield and inside back for the Breakers last season. Gonzalez will replace San Jose midfielder Sissi, who suffered a rib separation on Sunday, June 8 versus the New York Power.

Approximately 50 WUSA players will compete in the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup in China in September and October. The eight WUSA teams are the Atlanta Beat, Boston Breakers, Carolina Courage, New York Power, Philadelphia Charge, San Diego Spirit, San Jose CyberRays and the Washington Freedom.
