Golden Eagles Come Back at Amsterdam

June 21, 2013 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles overcame an early 6-0 deficit on the road and surged past the host Amsterdam Mohawks with an 8-run rally in the sixth inning for an 11-7 victory at Shuttleworth Park on Friday night.

Glens Falls won their second in a row to improve to 8-5 in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. The defending champion Amsterdam Mohawks lost their second straight in falling to 5-9.

The game was a rematch of last year's Championship Series which Amsterdam won 2 games to 0. A packed house of 1,830 jammed into Shuttleworth Park for the team's second of five Fireworks Night Spectaculars of the season.

The Golden Eagles blasted three home runs in the contest and benefited from some timely miscues by the Amsterdam defense in their big comeback.

Buddy Putnam (South Florida), Braxton Martinez (St. Louis) and Spencer Johnson (Missouri State) all hit home runs for the Golden Eagles. The Martinez blast was his second, both against Amsterdam. The Golden Eagles have hit five home runs this season, all against the Mohawks.

Ramon Laureano (NE Okla. A&M) was 3-for-5 with the go-ahead RBI in the sixth, a run scored, and his ninth stolen base of the season. Laureano is second in the league in steals and is a perfect 9-for-9 this year.

Amsterdam had a pair of long-balls in the loss as Jordan Ebert (Auburn) and Ed Charlton (NJIT) knocked them out back-to-back in a six-run rally in the opening frame. Charlton's homer was his third of the year good for a tie for the league lead.

John Nogowski (Florida State) was 2-for-5 with a couple RBI's and a run scored for Amsterdam.

The Mohawks knocked Glens Falls starter Fernando Fernandez (Vanier, Que.) out of the game early with their six-run opening rally. Ebert hit a three-run homer over the Chain Monster giving the Mohawks a 4-0 lead at the time. It was Ebert's third game with Amsterdam after joining the team earlier this week.

A couple pitches later, Ed Charlton carried an 0-2 pitch out to left-center. Charlton also had seven home runs with Amsterdam last year and his 10 career homers is tied for the most in PGCBL history with Erick Gaylord who had 10 in 2011 with the Watertown Wizards.

Matt Ternowchek (Notre Dame) was solid for the Mohawks in preserving the lead lasting five strong innings and striking out seven while giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Buddy Putnam's two-run homer in the fourth got Glens Falls on the board at 6-2 but Amsterdam quickly made it 7-2 in the bottom of that inning with Josh Gardiner (Radford) scoring shortly after his league-leading fifth double of the season.

The wheels came off for the Mohawks in the sixth inning with a couple of errors and couple of other misplays while Glens Falls would score eight straight. Amsterdam reliever Kevin Guthrie (Brown) had a perfect ERA entering the game but that was damaged on a three-run homer by Braxton Martinez (St. Louis) trimming the deficit to 7-5.

Three more would reach for Glens Falls on an infield single, walk, and bunt with lead-runner beating the throw on the out attempt.

J.Q. Folena (Cabrillo) would tie the game at 7-7 with his two-run single to left-center. A couple batters later, Ramon Laureano (NE Okla. A&M) gave the Eagles their first lead of the game with his RBI single to left. And Glens Falls would tack on a couple more for a big 8-run inning before Amsterdam was able to get back to the dugout in what had become a 10-7 game.

Spencer Johnson launched a towering solo blast in the ninth off Taylor Butler (LSU) to extend the Eagles' lead to 11-7.

The Mohawks had a pair of runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings which included doubles by Keith SKinner (Fairfield) and Jordan Ebert (Auburn) but were no longer able to string together the base-hits.

Glens Falls hosts the first-place and #9 nationally ranked Albany Dutchmen on Saturday night at East Field in a battle of the top two teams in the East Division.

Amsterdam travels to Little Falls to play the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs Saturday at 7:00 with Logan Fullmer (Maine) taking the mound. The Mohawks return to Shuttleworth Park on Sunday at 5:00 with a doubleheader against the Newark Pilots.
