GLIFL Week Twelve in Review

Published on June 27, 2006 under Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) News Release

So quickly after the season started, the Great Lakes Indoor Football League has successfully completed its first regular season with three more exciting games. The Battle Creek Crunch ousted Marion from playoff contention with a 48-26 win over NY/NJ, while Marion fell at Rochester 47-38. Port Huron completed an undefeated first regular season with a 66-37 win at Lehigh Valley. Over 70,000 fans went through GLIFL turnstiles throughout the regular season.

ROCHESTER RAIDERS 47, MARION MAYHEM 38

The Mayhem couldn't overcome a game-ending injury to WR/DB Jeremy Werner as the Raiders used more timely offense to finish the regular season 7-3. Omar Baker made his return from a broken jaw and threw a touchdown to Noah Fehrenbach in the fourth quarter to take an insurmountable 47-32 lead. With the loss and Battle Creek win, the Marion Mayhem join NY/NJ as the teams to miss the league's first playoffs. Rochester's 22-6 second quarter outburst was the difference in the game. The Raiders host Lehigh Valley on July 8 in the first playoff game in Rochester professional football history.

PORT HURON PIRATES 66, LEHIGH VALLEY OUTLAWS 37

Lehigh Valley couldn't overcome the undefeated Pirates and 14 of their own penalties in a 66-37 season-ending loss. Shane Franzer, in a playoff tune-up, completed 7 of 9 passes for 152 yards and five touchdowns in the rout. The Pirates also scored two defensive touchdowns in the game, as Lehigh Valley couldn't find an answer for anything Port Huron did. To be fair, this was a throwaway game, as both teams already knew their exact playoff seed. The Pirates, #1 in the league, will host Battle Creek in the first round, while Lehigh Valley travels to Rochester.

BATTLE CREEK CRUNCH 48, NY/NJ REVOLUTION 26

Julio Ramirez threw four second-half touchdown passes, but it was not enough to overcome a 27-0 halftime deficit in the final game of the year for the Revolution. Battle Creek WR Chesaurae Rhodes, a week after suffering a seizure before the Port Huron game, ran for 40 yards and two touchdowns, and added 3 catches for 17 yards in the playoff-clinching win. Eric Gardner tied Ernie Smith's season-long record with three interceptions in the game. Gardner finishes the regular season with seven picks, one behind Rochester DB Gerald Dias. The Crunch travel to Port Huron for the second time in three weeks to try and reverse their in-state fortunes in the playoffs.
