The Battle Creek Crunch had fate on their side on Saturday night, following a 48-26 victory over the New York/ New Jersey Revolution at Kellogg Arena. With the win, the Crunch (4-6) made the playoffs after a Marion Mayhem defeat to the Rochester Raiders on Saturday. The Crunch held the tiebreaker with the Mayhem, following a 76-66 score in the two games against each other this year, each team winning one.
Tim Kubiak didn't have to throw the ball much this week, as he went 9-for-15 for 156 yards in the victory. He was only picked off once while throwing three touchdowns and running in one on his own. Eric Gardner added to his league high total of touchdowns, now at 25 with a six-yard reception in the second quarter. Shawn Blackmon also caught his first touchdown pass of the season on his only 27-yard catch. Richard Gills brought in three receptions for 63 yards to lead the way with a 40-yard touchdown to his credit. Chesaurae Rhodes ran 15 times for 39 yards and drove into the end zone twice in the win, and caught three passes for 16 yards.
Julio Ramirez went 13-for-24 for 135 yards in the loss for the Revolution, who end their season winless at 0-10. Even though he threw four touchdowns in the game, he was picked off twice. Both of those passes were the Gardner, who would have three on the night to push his team lead to seven picks on the season. Zikoma Richards caught seven balls for 82 yards and three touchdowns on the night. Anthony Reece also grabbed three passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. Afterbeing held to 34 yards in the first half, the Revolution had 140 yards of total offense.
The Crunch will now head to Port Huron for the second time in three weeks, as the Great Lakes Indoor Football League kicks off on July 8th. The Balck and Orange will battle the top seed in the GLIFL in the Port Huron Pirates. The Pirates (10-0) topped the Lehigh Valley Outlawz 66-37 in their regular season finale on Saturday, and are considered the early favorite to the win the inaugural Great Lakes Bowl, scheduled for July 22nd.
