GLIFL Week Eleven in Review
Published on June 20, 2006 under Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) News Release
With one week left in the inaugural GLIFL regular season, the league finds itself with a playoff spot still up for grabs. After Marion's 41-38 last-second loss in Lehigh Valley, the Mayhem either need a win or a Battle Creek loss to make the postseason. Chris Reed's 37-yard field goal with eight seconds left propelled an injury-riddled Outlawz side to the playoffs, where they will match up with Rochester on July 8. However, all six teams still have one more football game to play to finish the league's successful inaugural season.
PORT HURON PIRATES 69, BATTLE CREEK CRUNCH 7
Complete domination. Period. Port Huron needed to make a statement that they were still by-far the #1 team in the GLIFL after an overtime win in Rochester, and they made that statement. Rayshawn Askew set GLIFL records with 127 rushing yards and an amazing six rushing touchdowns, and he even had three more called back due to penalty. Battle Creek scored the first seven points, then it all fell apart. A kickoff out of bounds, an easy Pirates touchdown drive, and a muffed kickoff by Herb Haygood spelled doom for the Crunch. Shane Franzer completed three of four passes for 70 yards and three touchdowns in the rout, while the Pirates defense held Battle Creek to 85 yards and five turnovers. 46 of the Crunch yards were gained on the team's first drive.
ROCHESTER RAIDERS 60, NY/NJ REVOLUTION 6
Rochester used two first quarter Reggie Cox touchdown runs to take a 14-0 lead that ballooned to 39-6 at halftime over the winless Revolution. Rochester, who sat out a few key players due to injury concerns, clinched a first-round GLIFL Playoffs home game against the Lehigh Valley Outlawz with the win and Marion loss. Raiders players and fans agree that the win and ensuing home playoff game on July 8 are huge for the team, as the ESL Sports Centre is one of the rowdiest places in all of indoor football. NY/NJ goes for their first win in Battle Creek, while Rochester hosts Marion with a chance to knock the Mayhem completely out of the playoffs.
LEHIGH VALLEY OUTLAWZ 41, MARION MAYHEM 38
One of the most exciting games in GLIFL history ended with Marion kicker Andy Cline missing a 36-yard field goal as time expired. But that wasn't the story. The story started with an Andy Cline field goal at halftime to tie the game at 17. Lehigh Valley took a 31-24 lead with a Keith McConnell touchdown catch late in the third, only to watch Marion score 14 unanswered (the second on a Ted Sauder quarterback keeper) to take a 38-31 lead with 2:38 left. Cline hit the scoreboard on the kickoff, allowing a Chad Schwenk - to - Steve Cook touchdown pass to tie the game for the fifth time at 38. A missed Andy Cline field goal and a James Spence kick return put Lehigh Valley at the Marion 24. Reed hit his GLIFL-leading 16th field goal with 8.3 seconds left, which finished his 2/6 field goal kicking performance.
