Gladiators preparing for 2007 season
As the 2007 WBA season approaches there have been questions around the Rome, GA community about the return of their beloved Gladiators. Well, good news for the community the Gladiators are back with new ownership, coaches, and staff. The ownership group, which has been in place for several month's now consists of several local Romans. Elena Brown, is the teams Director of Operations and Co-Owner, Alexis Prasino Co-Owner, and Pat Martin will serve as the teams Financial Officer and Co-Owner.
E. Lindsey Maxwell will serve as General Manager and Co-Owner for the Gladiators. Mr. Maxwell is a partner with Perennial Sports & Entertainment where he is Assistant General Counsel to the NBA Referees Association. He is also a NBA, NFL, AFL and overseas agent/negotiator; on top of negotiating contracts for athletes he also brokers media deals, music/performance contracts for business leaders, authors, rap/R&B artists, and coaches. Anthony Hill a Rome native will serve as the Assistant General Manager of the Gladiators. Former Shorter College women's basketball player Fallon Wright will serve as the Director of Media Relations, with Kiesha Harvey serving as her assistant. Tara Rainwater, who owns her own dance studio in Rome, will serve as the teams dance coordinator, and Seery Cato and Gail Crawford make up the Gladiators sales staff.
Cabral Huff has been named Head Coach of the Rome Gladiators for the 2007 season. Cabral's playing days started at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta, GA where during his junior year he was named to the All City Second Team. However his playing career was damaged and almost cut short before his senior year. Doctors cleared Cabral and he pursued his playing career at Morehouse College for 2 years. However Cabral wasn't the same player so he stopped playing so that he could complete his BA degree in English from Morehouse in 4 years. After graduation, Cabral began coaching basketball at Booker T. Washington High School where he remained for 4 years. He then went on to pursue the opportunity to start a new varsity program with only 9th and 10th graders at Dutchtown High School where he remained for 2 years. He then moved on to Cedartown High School where he spent the 2006-2007 season. Cabral has over 16 years of basketball experience both playing and coaching. His overall record is 72 wins and 60 losses.
Huff's, Associate Head Coach is Coach Inca M. Harvey who was a High School Parade & Street & Smith All-American which led to her becoming a NCJCAA and Div. II All-American at Johnson C. Smith University. Coach Harvey went on to play in numerous PRO-AM leagues around the country and also played in the WBL, the first women's basketball league. However, an injury forced Coach Harvey from her dream of the WNBA. Coach Harvey's 30 years of playing experience didn't go unnoticed as she began coaching various AAU teams including becoming the Assistant Head Coach of Northwestern High School Girls' Varsity team and Head coach of Girls' Junior Varsity in Baltimore, Maryland. Coach Harvey most recently was the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Georgia where she led a team that had a total of 5 victories combined for the past 4 years to the state tournament in her very first year. She was voted Coach of the Year consecutively in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005, as well as being featured in the Atlanta Tribune Magazine in 2004 in an article entitled, Against the Ropes". Coach Harvey has over 15 years of coaching experience.
Coach Bryant Caldwell, who is originally from Rahway NJ, attended Rahway High School and played on the varsity men's basketball team during his 4 years at Rahway. After graduating he decided to join the US Army as a Logistic Specialist in 1983, until he recently retired after 23 years of service. He is the recipient of both the Purple Heart and the soldier's medal after getting injured during Iraqi Freedom. His love for the game continued while in the US Army, as he played on traveling teams while stationed in Maryland, Oklahoma, Korea and Germany. Coach Caldwell also served as assistant coach for TEAM GEORGIA ELITE 16U and Community Coach at Cedartown High School. Bryant is married to his lovely wife Andrea of 22 years and they have one son Tariq Caldwell who plays varsity basketball and is a junior at Cedartown High School.
Virgil Amey, who will serve as a consultant for the Gladiators, is currently a physical education teacher at Douglas Co. High School where he also is the Head Boys Basketball Coach. In 2003-2005, he decided to return to Washington High School which is his alma mata, during this time he took the program from the abyss and resurrected the boys program to respectability. From 1997-2003 Virgil coached the Gainesville Red Elephants to 2 Final Fours, 3 Region Championships, 3 Sweet Sixteen and was a 2 time GHSA Region Coach of The Year. From 1992-1997, he was the Head Girls Basketball Coach of Druid Hills High School where he was named Dekalb Co. Coach of the Month on 2 occasions. In 1996, he was an instructional basketball coach for the ABL. Virgil was a key contributor for the 1987 AAAA State Champs during his high school years. Virgil now lives in Jonesboro, Georgia with lovely wife Dawnne. Virgil and his wife Dawnne have four kids, Corey, Justin, Jordan and Alexis.
Bobby Rouse, who is the teams Director of Player Personnel, will work closely with Coach Huff in getting the right players in place so that the Gladiators can continue its winning tradition in the WBA. Rouse who is originally from Barnwell, SC has played professionally in the IBA, SWBL, USBL, XBA, SEBL, France, Germany, and Luxembourg. Since retiring due to injury in 2003 he has been an Assistant Coach with Denmark Tech College (NJCAA) for 2 seasons (2003-04, 2004-05). He has also served as the Deputy Commissioner(2005, 2006) of the SEBL based out of Cartersville, GA. In 2006 he was an Assistant Coach and also Director of Player Relations with the Cartersville Warriors of the WBA. The Gladiators as an organization are geared up and ready to go for the 2007 WBA season; looking to continue its winning ways, with an added community first approach.
