Gladiators Move to No. 1 in vPower Rankings Shakeup

June 30, 2014 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release

CHICAGO - The Cleveland Gladiators (13-1) moved into the top spot of the AFLFieldPass.com vPower Rankings following a 48-41 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (8-7) at home in Week 16. The Gladiators, who are undefeated at home this season, have a chance to secure the East Division championship and No. 1 seed in the American Conference this weekend with a win and a loss by the Pittsburgh Power (12-3). Cleveland hosts the Portland Thunder (4-10), who currently hold the No. 4 seed in the National Conference playoff picture, in "NET10 Wireless Arena Football Saturday" action on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 5.

The No. 2-ranked Power knocked off the Jacksonville Sharks (5-9), 64-48, last week and can keep Cleveland from clinching the division title this week with a win over the New Orleans VooDoo (2-12). A Pittsburgh victory would keep the Power in contention for the top overall seed in the American Conference playoffs and secure a season sweep of the VooDoo. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET Monday, July 7 on ESPN3.

The San Jose SaberCats (10-4) snapped the 18-game winning streak of the Arizona Rattlers (14-1) last week with a stunning 62-33 victory at home over the back-to-back defending ArenaBowl champions. The win moved San Jose up one spot to No. 3 in this week's Rankings, while the loss dropped the Rattlers down three spots to No. 4 heading into their second bye week of the year. Arizona's significant fall was due in large part to the 29-point margin of defeat and the win-streak portion of the vPower tabulation. The SaberCats can clinch the Pacific Division crown and No. 2 seed in the National Conference playoffs this weekend with a victory over the LA KISS (3-11). Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET Sunday, July 6 on ESPN3.

Coming in at No. 5 in this week's vPower Rankings are the Spokane Shock (8-7), who clinched their fourth playoff berth in the last five seasons with a 64-46 victory over LA in Week 16. Spokane has a bye in Week 17 and will return to action against the Arizona Rattlers in a CBS Sports Network matchup on Saturday, July 12.
