
Gladiators dump Checkers, 3-2

Despite arriving one hour and 20 minutes late due to travel traffic, the Gladiators dominated from start to finish and beat the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 at the Cricket arena on Wednesday night to improve to 11-2-1 on the season.
Steve Slonina's first goal of the season gave the gave the Gladiators a 1-0 lead at 16:54 of the first period when he picked up an Anthony Aquino rebound in the slot and ripped a shot past an out stretched Charlotte goaltender David St. Germain. Wes Fox tallied his first professional assist and point on the goal.
Early in the second period, Charlotte tied the contest up at 1-1 on a goal by Allen Egland at 2:04 of the period. Jeff State added an assist on the goal.
The Gladiators regained the lead just 56 seconds later on slap shot by Troy Milam from the point. Mike Vigilante extended his point-scoring streak to nine games as he added an assist on the goal. Brandon Dietrich also had an assist on the goal at 3:00 of the second period.
Kris Goodjohn pushed the Gladiators lead to 3-1 with his sixth goal of the season. He picked up a loose puck in the slot and flipped it past St. Germain at the 6:54 mark of the second period. Troy Milam and Mike Vigilante added the assists on the goal. Charlotte tried to make up the two-goal difference late in the third period as they pulled goaltender St. Germain with less than a minute left to play.
Dusty Jamieson was able to pick up one goal for the Checkers at 19:24 of the third with the extra attacker. Lucas Lawson and Allen Egeland added the assists on the goal. Charlotte could get no closer as Michael Garnett and the Gladiators closed the door on the Checker. Gwinnett out shot Charlotte 33-30 while going 0-7 on the man advantage, just the second time this season the Gladiators have gone a game without a power play goal.
Tomorrow night is College Night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center when the South Carolina Stingrays are in town for a 7:05 p.m. tilt. Get a $5 mezzanine level ticket with a valid college ID when you purchase your ticket at the Arena at Gwinnett Center Box office.
