Gibson named WIFL Coach of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Jason Gibson of the Columbus Lions has been named World Indoor Football League Coach of the Year, it was announced Friday, June 29, 2007.

Gibson, who led the Lions to a 10-4 record and a berth in Saturday's World Indoor Bowl I against the Augusta Spartans, received five votes from a panel of 12 league coaches, administrators, staff and fans. Augusta Spartans coach Bubba Diggs received three while Marquette Smith of the Osceola Ghostriders and Leon Bright of the Daytona Beach Thunder two each.

"I've had great assistants, great players and great owners," Gibson said. "Everything has come together this season and it's been a thrill to be a part of it."

The Lions had both the league's best home record (6-1) and were the only league team to have a winning record (4-3) on the road. Columbus also featured the league's best defense with three players of the year (Eugene Goodman, Jauron Dailey and Damian Daniels).

Augusta (9-6) and Columbus face off Saturday night, with pre-game festivities starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Columbus Civic Center box office and ticketmaster.com.
