San Jose Giants News Release
Lancaster scored six runs in a sloppy top of the seventh inning to break open a close game and defeat the San Jose Giants 10-3 on Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium. The JetHawks, who have now won the first two games of the series, rapped out just two hits in the pivotal top of the seventh, but took advantage of three walks and two errors to take control of the contest. With the loss, San Jose drops to 41-25 and now leads the North Division by just two games over the Stockton Ports (39-27). Four games remain in the first half.
For the second consecutive night, the Giants struggled offensively against Lancaster pitching. On Wednesday, San Jose mustered only four hits and never enjoyed a lead.
Chris Province (1-0) earned the win on the mound after limiting the Giants to one hit and one unearned run over five innings. Province, who was making his second appearance of the season with Lancaster since a promotion, struck out five and worked around four walks. San Jose didn't record their first hit of the night until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Taylor Wilding (0-4) suffered the loss out of the Giants bullpen after surrendering the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning. With the game tied 1-1, Lancaster's Josh Reddick began the rally with a one-out double to the fence in left center field. After Daniel Nava singled to put runners on the corners, Chih-Hsien Chiang delivered a single to plate Reddick for a 2-1 JetHawks lead.
The floodgates opened in the top of the seventh as Lancaster sent 10 batters to the plate against three separate San Jose pitchers. Wilding began the frame by issuing a walk to Aaron Reza before Jason Place flied out to left. Joe Paterson was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly walked Jorge Jimenez on four pitches. After Lars Anderson smoked a double down the right field line to score Reza and move Jimenez to third, the Giants elected to intentionally walk Jon Still to load the bases. Reddick followed with a ground ball to second base that could have resulted in an inning-ending double play, however Matt Downs mishandled the ball for an error as Jimenez scored to make it a 4-1 margin.
Nava then stepped to the plate and hammered a double into the left field corner to score two more Lancaster runs. After Chiang brought home a run with a ground out, Paterson's evening came to an end as Craig Whitaker was brought into pitch. The first batter Whitaker faced, Argenis Diaz, grounded a ball to shortstop that was booted by Sharlon Schoop for an error as Nava scored the sixth and final run of the inning.
Nava was the hitting star for Lancaster as he finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI's.
Giants starting pitcher Henry Sosa received a no-decision after surrendering one run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings. Sosa, who was removed from the game after throwing 79 pitches, walked four and struck out five.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning as Sosa was pulled with a runner at second base and two outs. Wilding was brought in to face Jimenez, who doubled down the left field line to give the JetHawks a 1-0 lead.
San Jose quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 1-1. Schoop started the rally when he reached on a strike three, passed ball. After Mike McBryde singled sharply into center field to put runners on the corners, Tyler Graham brought home Schoop with a ground out to shortstop.
The Giants scored their final two runs of the evening in the bottom of the eighth. Trailing 8-1, Graham reached on a one-out fielding error committed by the first baseman Anderson. After Matt Downs doubled to left to put a pair of runners in scoring position, Pablo Sandoval grounded a single into right field to score Graham. Ryan Rohlinger then lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left field plating Downs.
