Bakersfield Blaze News Release
In a bizarre game at San Jose Municipal Stadium, the Bakersfield Blaze and San Jose Giants exchanged punches, but the Giants punched hardest, and knocked off the Blaze 8-6 on Tuesday night.
The Blaze got out to a quick start in this one, taking an early lead for only the second time in the last seven games.
In the top of the first inning, Bakersfield used a hit batsman, three singles, and a RBI groundout to grab a quick 2-0 lead. The Giants, however, answered with a tally in the bottom half when Adam Duvall slugged his 20th homer of the season, a solo shot off Blaze starter Josh Smith, to cut the Blaze lead to 2-1.
The Blaze then added a few more. In the second inning, off Giants starter Kelvin Marte, Bakersfield got a run but left the bases loaded, and led 3-1, before Devin Lohman cranked his 12th homer of the year in the 3rd to put the Blaze up 4-1.
From that point, however, the Giants went on a tear, utilizing 5 pitchers through 6.2 innings to hold the Blaze at bay while scoring 2 in the bottom of the 3rd, and 2 unearned runs in the 5th off Smith before the Blaze went to the pen, and the Giants tacked on 3 off Daniel Wolford in the 6th to go up, 8-4, and those runs would prove to be the difference in the game.
Bakersfield cut into the Giants lead with a 2-run 7th, making it just 8-6, but left the bases loaded for the second time, going 0-for-4 with the bases loaded in the ballgame. And finally, the 6th and 7th pitchers of the night for San Jose got the job done.
Shawn Sanford went 1.1 innings of hitless ball, and Jose Valdez (S, 6) wrapped things up with a 1-2-3 9th inning.
The loss drops the Blaze to 16-22 in the second half and 57-51, overall.
The series in San Jose continues Wednesday night at 7:05pm with Daniel Renken going up against Ryan Bradley, in a rematch of a game from last week. Tune in LIVE on BakersfieldBlaze.com as Dan Besbris brings you the play by play, beginning with a pregame show 5 minutes prior to first pitch.
