THE SAN JOSE GIANTS...begin the second half on Monday night with the opener of a three-game series against the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants won the first half North Division crown with a 43-27 record - one game ahead of the Ports (42-28). By virtue of winning the division title, San Jose has clinched a spot in the playoffs and a first round bye. The Giants will begin the postseason on Saturday, September 6 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series.
Offensive Leaders...The Giants finished the half second in the California League in batting average (.281), first in runs scored (5.6 per game), third in home runs (60) and second in stolen bases (94). Individually, Pablo Sandoval is first in the league in hitting (.365), second in slugging percentage (.602), third in doubles (22) and on-base percentage (.418) and tied for fourth in RBI (53). Second baseman Matt Downs leads the Giants with 12 home runs while outfielders Tyler Graham (26) and Mike McBryde (21) are tops on the squad in stolen bases.
Sosa To Start Series Opener...Henry Sosa will make the start on the mound in Monday's series opener. The 22-year old right-hander has made four starts with the Giants since joining the club from Extended Spring Training on May 25 after recovering from offseason knee surgery. Sosa has logged a 1-1 record and 2.00 ERA with 21 strikeouts in just 18 innings. Sosa entered the year ranked as the #5 prospect in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America.
Giants vs. Ports 2008...The season series between San Jose and Stockton has been competitive with the Giants holding onto a slim 7-6 advantage. San Jose split a four-game series in their most recent visit to Banner Island Ballpark (May 16-19). Ryan Rohlinger (.385 AVG, 20-for-52, 2 HR, 8 RBI) and Sandoval (.327 AVG, 16-for-49, 2 HR, 7 RBI) have been the Giants' top hitters versus the Ports. Downs paces the club with four home runs, but has hit only .208 (11-for-53).
Pucetas Set To Return From DL...Kevin Pucetas is expected to be activated from the Disabled List on Wednesday to start the series finale on the mound. Pucetas, one of five San Jose players named to the California League All-Star team, hasn't pitched since May 29 after suffering a broken toe. In 11 starts this year, Pucetas owns a perfect 7-0 record to go with a 2.54 ERA - third-lowest in the California League. Pucetas replaces Clayton Tanner (arm tightness) in the rotation. Tanner is expected to miss only one start.
Stockton Ports...The Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, enter the series with a 42-28 overall record. Stockton finished the first half strong winning six out of their last seven games. The Ports are tied for third in the league in hitting (.268) and second in ERA (3.80). Offensively, Stockton is led by first baseman Sean Doolittle. The former first round draft pick is fifth in the league in batting average (.328), second in home runs (16) and tied for fourth in RBI (53).
