Ghostriders defeat Spartans
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Paul Sharpe rushed for 97 yards and four first-half touchdowns as the Osceola Ghostriders beat the Augusta Spartans, 52-37, in a World Indoor Football League game before 2,146 at IOA Field at Silver Spurs Arena Saturday, February 24, 2007.
Sharpe, a former Florida A&M standout, tied the Ghostriders' single-game touchdown mark as Osceola (1-0) opened up an early two-touchdown lead.
Augusta (1-1) closed to 32-27 at halftime, but the Osceola defense held the Spartans without a touchdown until 2:58 remaining.
Former UCF quarterback Brandon Sumner threw for 73 yards and two touchdowns for the Ghostriders. James Panui had four catches for 40 yards.
Sharpe garnered the game offensive MVP honor, while Turmarian Moreland ( three tackles, one interception) earned defensive honors. Defensive lineman Harvey Joiner was the line MVP while Luther Huggins (147 yards on three returns) took Special Teams MVP.
The Ghostriders also earned 223 out of possible 300 "style points" from a committee of media and fans. Augusta was awarded 82.
Marvin Stone caught four passes for 59 yards and three touchdowns while also returning one kickoff for a score for the Spartans.
On Monday, the Columbus Lions play the Daytona Beach Thunder at 6:30 p.m,
