Oshawa Generals News Release

It was a loud one at the GM Centre tonight as the boys advanced to round two with a 3-2 win over Peterborough. Matt Mistele scored two goals tonight including the game-winner to send his team to the next round. After two wins at home, a loss on the road, and one win in Peterborough, the Gens continue their playoff run.

It was obvious the Gens came to play tonight showing all kinds of momentum from the drop of the puck. Only 2:48 into the period, Mistele scored his second of the playoffs with an impressive shot on Matthew Mancina, which put the Gens up 1-0. Michael Dal Colle and Stephen Desrocher were credited the assists on the opening goal. Both teams managed to kill off a penalty each to keep the game a one-goal difference. The pressure continued by the Generals late in the period and they headed to the power play as Matt McCartney sat for holding. Just under a minute later, Jonathon Ang was called for delay of the game to give the Gens a two-man advantage for 54 seconds to start the second. The Gens were ahead 1-0 and outshot the Petes 12-4 after 20 minutes.

The Generals came out for the second showing they wanted this win. Smith had an early chance on Mancina but the goalpost saved the Petes on that one. Despite a power play for the Gens after Matthew Timms sat for delay of game, it was cut short as Smith headed to the box for tripping. The Petes capitalized on the four on four play as Greg Betzold went top shelf on Appleby to tie things at 1-1. The penalties continued throughout the second including a five minute penalty and a game misconduct to Cameron Lizzote for slew foot. While on the power play the Generals managed to regain their lead after Smith snuck the puck by Mancina for his second of the playoffs. Desrocher and Mermis both picked up the assists on Smith's goal. The lead didn't last long as Matthew Spencer evened things at 2-2 on the power play, after Desrocher was called for slashing. Michael Clarke was called for cross checking at 19:41, sending the Gens to a power play to start the third. Although things were tied at 2-2, the Gens continued to outshoot the Petes 29-13 after the second.

It was an anxious third period for the fans tonight as things remained tied at 2-2 for what seemed like most of the period. The shots continued for the Generals throughout the last frame putting up a total of 50, compared to just 22 for their opponents. Both teams had a shot to take the lead with power plays for both sides. With just under seven minutes remaining in the game, Mistele scored his second of the game and the Gens jumped ahead with a 3-2 lead. It was a nerve-racking end to the third as Will Petschenig took a tripping penalty with five minutes remaining, followed by a penalty to Cole Cassels with 37 seconds to go in the game. However, the Gens managed to hang onto their one-goal lead and took the series in five games!
