Oshawa, Ontario - The 2013 OHL Priority Selection presented by State Farm was wrapped up on Saturday, with the Oshawa Generals selecting 15 players, including 7 forwards, 6 defenseman, and 2 goalies. Six of the 15 players were selected from the U.S. while the rest were from the Ontario area.
The first pick of the Generals was used to Mitchell Vande Sompel in the first round at 14th overall. Mitchell is a 5'9", 171 pound defenseman who collected 32 points in 23 games as he captained the London Knights-Gold. Mitchell is prided in being a puck-moving defenseman that is a good combination of skill and character.
The Generals used their second round pick to select centre Sam Harding at 31st overall. Sam collected 19 points in 32 games with the York Simcoe Express, and is noted for having quick hands and lots of creativity.
In the fourth round, the Generals selected defenseman Daniel Robertson (61st overall) and centre Chase Pearson (79th overall). Daniel played with for the Windsor Jr. Spitfires and tallied 15 points, while Chase played for the Atlanta Fire in the States. The 6'2" centre racked up 24 points in 22 games.
The fifth round saw the Generals select winger Ian Johnston from the Ottawa Senators AAA Minor Midget team at 94th overall. The Kanata native had a successful season with his Senators, 49 points in 29 games, 31 of which were assists.
With their pick in the 6th round, the Generals selected defenseman Stephen Templeton at 107th overall. Stephen is a solid defender with the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs, playing a total of 59 games.
The eighth round of the draft saw the Generals draft their first goaltender, as Jeremy Brodeur was selected 154th overall. Playing the 2012-13 season with Shattuck St. Mary's Midget AAA team, the Essex Falls native recorded 21 wins along with a 1.66 Goals Against Average. Jeremy is also the son of New Jersey Devil's netminder Martin Brodeur.
The 179th pick of the draft was used by the Generals to select winger Kenny Huether from the Huron-Perth Lakers. Kenny is a native of Londesborough, Ontario and scored 28 goals and 51 points in 57 games.
The Generals 10th round pick was used to select their fourth defenseman of the draft, as Rhodes Dolan was selected 194th overall. Rhodes will add to the Generals already intimidating defensive core, standing at 6'4"' and weighting in at 195 pounds. The Iowa native spent the past season playing for the Omaha Lancers.
At 214th overall, the Generals looked to Iowa again, selecting centre Patrick Grasso in the 11th round of the draft. The Ankeny, Iowa native recorded 2 points in 11 games with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the 2012-13 season.
The Generals selected some homegrown talent with their 12th round pick, selecting Oshawa Kinsmen goaltender Shawn Mabley 234th overall. At 6'3", Shawn fits the Generals recent trend of towering net minders.
With their 13th round pick, the Generals added some grit, selecting forward Jared Domin from the Detroit Belle Tires 254th overall. The Grand Rapids native recorded 17 points and 80 penalty minutes in 28 games.
The 14th round saw the Generals select winger Francis Prevel from the Kitchener Jr. Rangers at 274th overall, rounding out the 7 forwards selected by the Generals. Francis recorded 22 points in 53 games for Kitchener, and has the ability to be a powerful and versatile forward.
Selecting twice in the 15th round, the Generals returned to the Durham Region selecting defenseman Matthew McConnach at 294th overall before selecting defenseman Jalen Smereck at 299th overall, the final pick in the draft. Matthew is a native of Ajax and collected 15 points for the Don Mills Flyers, while Jalen hails from Detroit, Michigan and collected 11 points and 55 penalty minutes with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies.
