GBL names Players of the Week

California Division Player & Pitcher of the Week:

Tony Garcia, shortstop for the San Diego Surf Dawgs has been selected as California Division Player of the Week. Garcia, 25, out of Pepperdine University and the originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs, led the league in hits (12), runs (9), and On-Base Percentage (.556) while batting for an average of .480 during the week.

Grant Gregg, left-handed pitcher for the Chico Outlaws has been selected as the California Division pitcher of the Week. Gregg, 25, out of Texas A&M and with Double-A experience, won two and loss zero during the week. He pitched two complete games, including a shutout and struck out 10 while walking only 4 and posted an E.R.A. of 1.13 for the week. He raised his season record to 10-2 and lowered his league-leading E.R.A. to 2.08. This is the second week that Gregg has won this award in addition he was named GBL Pitcher of the Month for July.

Arizona Division Player and Pitcher of the Week:

Henry Calderon, shortstop for the Yuma Scorpions has been selected as Arizona Division Player of the Week. Calderon, 27, led the GBL in hits (12), triples (4), and slugging average (.852) during the week while driving in five runs as well. He went 12 for 27 for a .444 batting average that raised him to .345 for season, 4th best in the GBL at this time.

Akaka Igarashi, right-handed reliever for the Japan Samurai Bears has been selected as the Arizona Division pitcher of the week. Piggy, 27, from Tokyo Japan including time with the Yakult Swallows, was the only pitcher to win 2 games in the Arizona Division this week. He went 2-1 with a 1.69 E.R.A. striking out 8 and walking only 1. He raised his season strikeout total to 129 in only 100 innings pitched, just one behind teammate Hideki Nagasaki for the league lead.
