Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Ind. (October 21, 2002) â The Gary Steelheads today signed a well-known Chicago player.
Bryant Notree, who was released by the NBA's Denver Nuggets on October 17th, has agreed to play with the Gary Steelheads for the upcoming CBA season. He is a former Chicago Simeon High School, University of Illinois and University of Illinois-Chicago star.
"Bryant Notree can play in this league (NBA)," Nuggets Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "He simply ran into a situation where we would've had to cut someone under contract to keep him.
"He's terrific. I told him that. He deserves to be on this team."
After a stellar prep career at basketball power Simeon High School, Notree played three seasons at the University of Illinois before transferring to Illinois-Chicago. As a senior, he led the Flames in scoring (15.0 ppg.) and rebounding (6.9 rpg.). He was one of two players to finish in the top five in both scoring and rebounding in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. He earned All-MCC Second Team honors and was named the MCC's Newcomer of the Year.
"Bryant is a good-sized guard who can score and hit the boards," Steelheads Head Coach and Director of Basketball Operations Duane Ticknor said. "Anytime you get a player like Bryant, you know he is going to make your team better."
He spent this past summer with the Atlanta Hawks in the prestigious Shaw's Pro Summer League and the summer of 2001 with the Memphis Grizzlies in the Los Angeles Pro-Am Summer League. He has also played in Cypress and with the New Mexico Slam of the International Basketball League. In Cypress, Notree played for Keravnos Nicosia. He averaged 21.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in six games of the Saporta Cup.
The Steelheads open training camp on October 31.
