Gary Steelheads Hire Rob Spon as Assistant Coach

GARY, Indiana- Gary Steelheads' coach Cliff Levingston selected his first assistant coach today, naming Rob Spon to a position on the staff. Spon currently serves as an assistant coach with the Indiana Alleycats of the Continental Basketball Association.

When the Gary Steelheads begin play in the United States Basketball League this Spring, it will be familiar territory for Spon. Last season he served as Assistant Coach and Director of Player Personnel with the NEPA (Northeast Pennsylvania) Breakers.

Spon served as head coach for two teams in the International Basketball Association, as well as two teams in the International Basketball League. He developed and coached back-to-back IBA championship finals teams with the Magic City Snowbears in Minot, North Dakota. He ranks as the second most winning active coach in the IBA.

Spon began his coaching career at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania. The Tomcats finished atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) two years after his arrival. He also served as head coach at Sharpsville High School in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.

Through the years, Spon has coached in a number of off-season basketball camps. He founded the Erie Invitational Basketball Showcase to serve as a vehicle for players trying to advance their basketball careers in the NBA, CBA or in Europe.
