Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - The honors keep on coming for former Shreveport-Bossier Captains first baseman/designated hitter Christopher Garcia, as he was named as the third best prospect across independent baseball by Baseball America in their recent list - the highest American Association player on the list. Captains shortstop Bryan Frichter, who was having an excellent season before suffering a knee injury in July, was also named to the list as an honorable mention.

"He's a pure hitter," Captains manager Ricky Van Asselberg told Baseball America. "He doesn't get fooled much. He's a very mature hitter. We've worked on pulling the ball more, but he's a natural opposite-field hitter. When he learns to pull, his power will spike."

The 22-year-old Garcia finished second in the American Association in batting average for the second year in a row, this time hitting .383, a new career high. He also set career highs with 14 home runs and 90 RBIs, leading the Captains in all three categories and eventually getting him signed by the Atlanta Braves organization earlier this month.

Frichter, who was the United League Rookie of the Year in 2008, was hitting .324 with three home runs and 22 RBIs in 59 games before getting hurt in his first season with the Captains. The 25-year-old Louisianan had a .961 fielding percentage at shortstop, which was third best in the league among shortstops with at least 50 games played at the position.
