SAN DIEGO â The SunFire travels to Phoenix this Saturday, August 30, 7:05 p.m. to meet an old foe, the Arizona Caliente, at North High School in Phoenix. Check below for the complete game schedule.
The SunFire gained its first win of the season by defeating the Los Angeles Amazons 20-12 Saturday night at La Jolla High School. The Amazons dropped to 2-2 and the SunFire improved to 1-2 in WPFL action.
The Caliente enter the contest with a 3-0 record and are considered one of the dominant teams in the league. The SunFire and the Caliente were members of the WAFL in 2001, the first season of play for both teams. San Diego earned its first ever victory in the inaugural season opener with a 14-12 win over the Arizona. San Diego leads the all-time series 2-1 over the Caliente. With a win, San Diego would even its record to 2-2 and possibly move into fourth place in the 10-team American Conference.
SUPER SUNFIRE - Third year SunFire running back Railene Ritzberg led all rushers with 188 yards and 1 touchdown last week against Los Angeles.
SIZZLIN' STAT Rookie defensive back Angela Corinne netted the first SunFire defensive touchdown of the 2003 campaign with a 45-yard interception return last week against Los Angeles. The San Diego SunFire is a member of the 17-team Women's Professional Football League. The SunFire's 2003 regular season consists of a 10-game schedule with San Diego playing its home games at La Jolla High School. Last season, the SunFire finished its second professional campaign at 9-1, the best regular season record in the disbanded American Football Women's League and Silver Cup Winners of the AFWL.
