Mississippi Surge News Release
BILOXI, MS -- The Mississippi Surge unveiled the teams' game jerseys for the 2009-10 season and announced that they have signed defenseman Steve Weidlich to be a player-assistant coach at a press conference on Tuesday.
The Surge's home jersey has a white body with blue shoulders, sleeves, and hem, and the road jersey has a blue body with grey shoulders and sleeves. Both jerseys have the body section bordered by stylized lightning bolts. The crest on both jerseys is the blue and gold Surge "S" logo, and the shoulders are decorated with the Surge "S" logo overlaid on the outline of the State of Mississippi. The jerseys were designed by Flynnagain Productions of Mississauga, Ontario.
A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Weidlich joins the surge after spending the majority of the past seven seasons with the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League. Over those seven seasons, Weidlich was a +101 with 29 goals and 83 assists in 301 regular season games. A member of the two Bucks teams that captured the Ray Miron President's Cup, the 6-2, 210-pound Weidlich appeared in 96 playoff games for Laredo, scoring 25 points (5g, 20a) and helping his team reach the finals in four consecutive seasons (2003-06) and reach the second round seven times. During the 2005-06 season, Weidlich made his American Hockey League debut, skating in seven games with San Antonio.
"Steve has made a great career decision," said head coach Steffon Walby. "He will be the kind of player and community that the Gulf Coast has missed over the past five or so years. As a defenseman, he's not a flashy player and it will be a good thing that most nights, we won't notice him. His time investment as an assistant coach and veteran will help bring a championship back to the coast."
SURGE BOLTS: On October 17, the Surge will host a pre-season scrimmage against Pensacola from 12-3 p.m. at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
Single-game tickets for the 2009-10 season go on sale Friday, September 25. The Surge will celebrate opening night October 24 at 7:30 p.m. against the Louisiana Ice Gators. The first 2,000 fans ages 18 and above will receive a Surge cap courtesy of The Peoples Bank and CableOne, and the first 5,000 fans magnet schedules from Z95.3 FM and Kicker 107.9 FM.
