Game Information and Match Notes - v Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
August 25, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Antonio FC News Release
At a glance...
Familiar Faces: SAFC head coach Alen Marcina is set to square off with his former coach, Bob Lilley. Lilley led the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2007, when Marcina made six appearances (five starts) with the team. Lilley owns the USL Championship's all-time record for coaching wins, but since Marcina took over SAFC in 2020, only Tampa Bay (215) has more points than Marcina's SAFC side (209).
West is Best: Since starting regular interconference competition in 2021, SAFC is 15-3-3 against the Eastern Conference with a +46 goal differential and seven shutouts.
Team Defense: Despite sitting 10th in the league in clean sheets, SAFC has allowed the second-fewest goals in the Western Conference (26), and the fifth-fewest in the entire league.

What they had to say:
Head coach Alen Marcina
(On the significance of the match..."
"Our mentality has to always be the same. That gives us an edge, ... our mentality. A lot of teams prepare for playoffs in playoffs. We've prepared for playoffs in preseason. So our mentality will be the same against the first place team or a team maybe on the other end of the spectrum - it wont change from us. We're gonna go and put our best foot forward and hopefully that means earning three points."
Forward Santiago Patiño
(On the significance of all the remaining matches...)
"I think every match, you want to go and win. That's the main thing, to get three points. But I think we're also in a stage of the season where every game matters a lot. And now that we're competing with Sacramento for first place, one thing that we know is when we play at home we know we have an advantage. And when it comes playoff time, that's going to be a great advantage for us, it happened for us last year. So we're going to fight to finish first and have every playoff match at home."
