San Diego Sunfire News Release

SAN DIEGO - The SunFire opens the second half to the season at home taking on the winless Temecula Scorpions at La Jolla High School Stadium on Saturday, September 13, 7:05 p.m. PT. Check below for the complete game schedule.

The SunFire have had a challenging first half of the season having lost four games to the league's toughest teams, three of whom remain undefeated. San Diego can improve their record during the second half of the season, as the SunFire will play four games against teams with worse records. One of those is Saturday's opponent, Temecula.

Although the Scorpions are new to women's football, they will not be an uncommon foe. Some of San Diego's former players are on the Scorpions roster. The expansion Scorpions are 0-4 and face a tough schedule continuing with the game against San Diego. Saturday night's matchup marks the first meeting ever between San Diego and Temecula.

SUNFIRE STAR – Last game, running back Railene Ritzberg had 25 carries for 188 yards and 1 TD.

ALL STAR - Carmen Cruz had 8 receptions for 108 yards and 1 TD to lead all receivers against Houston. Cruz is considered one of the top receivers in all of women's professional football.

ROOKIE WATCH - Linebacker Latashia Mckinney had 12 tackles to lead all linebackers against Houston last Saturday.

VET COMEBACK – Defensive captain and three-year all-star Athena Reyes has quietly made her presence felt for San Diego this season. Reyes, who led the league in interceptions last season, will be able to show off her receiving skills on the offense side of the line during the latter part of the season.

The San Diego SunFire is a member of the 17-team Women's Professional Football League. The SunFire's 2003 regular season consists of a 10-game schedule with San Diego playing its home games at La Jolla High School. Last season, the SunFire finished its second professional campaign at 9-1, the best regular season record in the disbanded American Football Women's League and Silver Cup Winners of the AFWL.
