Gallop team announces press conference

January 2, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Gallop, NM. Joseph Kolb, owner of the ABA Gallop, New Mexico 2005 expansion team today announced that it will hold a Press Conference on Monday, January 10th at 6PM in the historic El Morro Theatre in downtown Gallup. The public and press is invited.

At the Press Conference, Kolb will provide an update on the team's progress as well as formally introduce the team's name, "The Gallup Talons." According to Kolb, "We explored names and symbolism relavant to the southwest while being sensitive to Native American culture. The name we have chosen fits the area and the team's makeup well."

Kolb said he has spoken to members of the surrounding Navajo and Zuni tribes to verify there is no offensive or negative symbolism to the talon which is associated with eagles. "All of my contacts assured me the Talons would be a great name to have for a basketball team that will have a strong Native American representation," added Kolb. He also said that he has been in contact with many Native American players who have played on the Division I collegiate level as well as elite players from other parts of the country - and that his team will feature many of them."
