Galaxy to Visit Claymores
April 9, 2003 - National Football League Europa (NFLE)
Frankfurt Galaxy News Release
The Frankfurt Galaxy take the road this weekend, seeking its 2nd straight 2-0 start and 5th in team history. In 2002, the Galaxy began its season on a tear, racing away to a 4-1 record. The path promises to be more difficult this season, as the Galaxy go face to face with the highscoring Scottish Claymores on their home turf. Frankfurt holds a two-game winning streak against the Claymores, sweeping the series in 2002.
However, Scotland is riding an emotional high after a record-setting performance in Week One against the Berlin Thunder. Frankfurt is riding high itself headed into the fray. The Galaxy came back from behind with under a minute to play to knock off the F.C. Barcelona Dragons at the Waldstadion. Scotland currently owns the No. 1 offense in NFL Europe, while the Galaxy lay claim to the best defense in the league.
LAST WEEK'S NFL EUROPE ACTION
Frankfurt successfully defended its home field in the season opener by defeating the F.C. Barcelona Dragons 15-13 in front of 24,000 fans. German national K-Ralf Kleinmann booted three field goals, including the gameclinching 27-yarder with :05 seconds remaining.
RB-Jonas Lewis scored the Galaxy's first touchdown by capping a 10-play, 68 yard drive early in the first quarter. Kleinmann provided the rest of Frankfurt's points on his way to being named NFL Europe's Week One Special Teams Player of the Week. DE-Joey Evans also was honored by the league, being named the Defensive Player of the Week after his three sack, eight tackle performance. Frankfurt ended the game with five sacks.
Scotland set or tied 15 NFL Europe records in Week One during a 62-31 drubbing of the Berlin Thunder. The two teams combined for over 1,100 all-purpose yards, 93 points, 17 kickoff returns and 54 first downs.
Claymores RB-Ken Simonton tied an NFLEL record with four rushing touchdowns. Scotland recorded 288 yards rushing and 268 through the air, while giving up 357 passing yards and 98 on the ground. Simonton earned NFLEL Offensive Player of the Week accolades for his efforts against Berlin.
FLASHBACK: MAY 5, 2002
There were no gaudy final scores and offensive yards produced the last time the Galaxy traveled to Scotland. Frankfurt took the game 14-10 behind a late touchdown connection between QB-Joe Hamilton and WR-Jamaal Fobbs. The Galaxy defense held the Claymores to just 60 total offensive yards during that contest.
