Galaxy One Win Away From Hosting World Bowl
June 5, 2007 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
WITH just two weeks of a thrilling 2007 season remaining, three teams have emerged as the leading contenders to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV.
The first of the two berths in the title game could be decided this weekend if Frankfurt defeats Hamburg. That would see the Galaxy host World Bowl in their own Commerzbank Arena on Saturday, June 23.
But, if Hamburg pulls off a victory, the season will roll into Week 10 with both World Bowl spots still up for grabs. That would mark the first time in NFL Europa history that both World Bowl berths were unfilled heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
Week 9 begins with the Berlin Thunder (2-6) looking to rebound from last week's heartbreaking loss when they play host to the Rhein Fire (3-5) on Friday night.
Saturday sees the Amsterdam Admirals (3-5) visit a Cologne Centurions (5-3) club hungry for a home victory in order to keep pace in the World Bowl race.
The final contest has huge World Bowl implications as the Frankfurt Galaxy (6-2) takes on the Hamburg Sea Devils (5-3). Given the close nature of the standings this term, it would take a brave man to predict that this game will be a World Bowl dress rehearsal.

Fire head coach RICK LANTZ will be in an upbeat mood when his club makes an early start to Week 9 at Berlin. Rhein is coming off a hard-fought 41-38 victory over Amsterdam.
He says: "We did a lot of positive things against a team that really challenged us. I think our offense played very well and the two interceptions for touchdowns were crucial, as was the blocked punt."
Berlin head coach JOHN ALLEN is also in a positive mood ahead of the Friday night clash, even though his team has dropped four games in a row, including last week's contest against Frankfurt when the Thunder led 22-3 with 9:02 remaining before going on to lose 25-22.
He says: "I'm proud of our team. This team has character. They play hard and they play well and when they get it right they can be very explosive. At this point in the season, with our record being the way it is, it would be easy for them to fold it up and go home. But they have not done that."
Amsterdam will look to snap a two-game losing streak and keep its slim World Bowl hopes alive with a victory at Cologne on Saturday.
Head coach BART ANDRUS says: "We were obviously very disappointed to lose at Rhein because our guys played hard to the very end. That's all I can ask. We had some opportunities and didn't make the plays."
Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN was upset by his team's performance during last week's loss to Hamburg but knows Cologne is still in the thick of the World Bowl race.
He says: "I'm very disappointed. The only positive is that we are still in the World Bowl race. Hamburg deserved to win. They took away what we do well."
First-year head coach VINCE MARTINO saw his Sea Devils improve to 5-3 with a key road win at Cologne last weekend. It was a result that saw Hamburg move up to second place in the standings.
He says: "Our backs were against the wall as it was a game we had to win or we would have taken ourselves out of the World Bowl picture. It keeps us alive and I'm proud of our kids because they played hard. Obviously, next week is a big game for us."
Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES is one win away from a return visit to World Bowl after his club mounted an incredible comeback at Berlin last weekend.
The 2006 Coach of the Year says: "The biggest part of it is character - I think it showed up in our players. Obviously, the first three quarters were not great but we have to finish the game and we did that in the fourth quarter. We were happy to come out victorious and now we have to take care of our work and iron out the things that are not successful."
The World Bowl race explained
THE thrilling and closely-contested race to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV may be exciting fans across Europe but it is also sending league officials racing for their calculators and a copy of NFL Europa's tiebreaker procedures.
With the distinct possibility that the World Bowl race could enter Week 10 with both spots in the title game still up for grabs (for the first time in league history), here is a look at the postseason picture heading into Week 9.
The Frankfurt Galaxy can book a World Bowl berth this weekend with a win over Hamburg as that would give them seven victories and the best the Sea Devils could then reach would be six.
If that were to happen, and Cologne was to beat Amsterdam this weekend, Hamburg would need a victory in Week 10 and a Centurions loss at Frankfurt to reach the title game. That would leave both Hamburg and Cologne with 6-4 records and the Sea Devils would win the tiebreaker with a greater points differential in games between the two teams.
Should Hamburg win at Frankfurt and Cologne defeats Amsterdam, all three teams will go into Week 10 with 6-3 marks.
Even if Hamburg wins and Cologne loses in Week 9, all three teams will be alive heading into Week 10 - and both World Bowl spots will be open - as there would still be a possibility that all three clubs could end the year with 6-4 marks and 2-2 records in games among tied teams. Then it would come down to points differential.
Despite suffering two losses in a row to drop to 3-5, the Amsterdam Admirals remain alive in the World Bowl race and could conceivably end the year in a three-way tie for second place with Hamburg and Cologne.
In such a scenario, all three clubs would be 5-5 and have identical records in games among each other, meaning that particular World Bowl race would also come down to points differential.
Should the Rhein Fire finish with a 5-5 mark and make it a four-way tie for second place - which is possible - they would automatically knock the Admirals out of World Bowl contention.
In games among themselves, Hamburg and Cologne, the Admirals have the same 2-2 record as the Centurions and Sea Devils.
But in games between Amsterdam, Cologne, Hamburg and Rhein, the Admirals boast a 2-4 mark and it would be the Centurions who advanced as they would have a 4-2 record, compared to Hamburg and Rhein who would be 3-3 in games among those teams.

Hall chasing one of oldest records in NFL Europa history
COLOGNE Centurions defensive end JASON HALL (Carolina Panthers) is closing in on one of the oldest records in NFL Europa history.
With two weeks remaining, Hall needs four sacks to tie the single-season record of 14 sacks and five to own the mark outright.
London Monarchs linebacker DANNY LOCKETT set the record of 14 sacks in the inaugural 1991 season and matched the achievement in 1992.
Here is a look at how Hall has notched his league-leading 10 sacks through the opening eight weeks of the 2007 campaign:
Wk Opponent Tkls Sacks
1 at Ham 1 0.0
2 vs Frank 1 0.0
3 at Rhe 4 2.0
4 vs Ber 4 1.0
5 at Ber 4 1.0
6 vs Rhe 4 2.0
7 at Ams 1 1.0
8 vs Ham 6 3.0
TOTALS 25 10.0
Hall has recorded a sack in each of his past six games and can tie the league record for most consecutive games with at least one sack if he drops an Amsterdam Admirals quarterback this weekend.
The league record of seven consecutive games with a sack is held by defensive end JOSH TAVES (Barcelona Dragons), who recorded a quarterback takedown in each of the opening seven weeks of the 1998 season.
Hall also needs one sack to tie the club single season record of 11 set by FELIPE CLAYBROOKS in 2004.
The Centurions lead NFL Europa with 28 quarterback sacks, while their opponents this weekend, Amsterdam, have given up 21 sacks in eight games.
NFLE FACTS:Red Zone Battle
Something has to give when Hamburg meets Frankfurt in Week 9. Hamburg has the most efficient red zone offense in NFLE, scoring on 20 of 23 trips (87.0%) inside the 20-yard line (14 TD, 6 FG). Frankfurt has the league's toughest red zone defense, restricting opponents to scores on 18 of 25 visits (72.0%) inside the 20 (14 TD, 4 FG). Frankfurt ranks fifth in red zone offense while Hamburg is fifth in red zone defense.
O'Sullivan the first 300-yard passer of 2007 NFLE season
IN leading the Frankfurt Galaxy to a remarkable come-from-behind victory over the Berlin Thunder last weekend, Offensive Player of Week 8 J.T. O'SULLIVAN (Chicago Bears) became the first 300-yard passer in NFL Europa this spring.
O'Sullivan threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns, with his scoring strikes coming in the final 9:02 of the game.
In leading Frankfurt to those three crucial scores, O'Sullivan raised his game to another level. Here is a look at how he fared down the stretch compared to earlier in the game:
1st 6 possessions: 14 of 20 for 129 yds and 1 interception
Final 3 scoring possessions: 13 of 17 for 204 yards, 3 TDs
That outstanding ending to the game in Berlin did enough to catapult O'Sullivan to the top of the NFL Europa passer rating leaderboard as he now tops the league with a mark of 100.2 having thrown for 1,621 yards, 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
Speaking about his club's outstanding comeback, Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES says: "It was one of those games where we didn't give up until we saw the zeros on the clock. On the sideline, the players and the coaches were saying, 'We can't give up.
"I told the players, 'It's not over - you cannot give up. We have to continue to fight.' Our guys certainly went out there and fought and that showed a great deal of character."
Galaxy and Centurions players make early running in fan vote
VOTING for the 2007 All-NFL Europa team got underway last week, with fans being invited to pick their favorite players at NFLEurope.com and NFLEuropa.de.
For the sixth year in a row, the fan poll will account for one third of the votes, with one third being made up of votes by the media and one third coming from the coaching staffs of the six NFL Europa teams.
After one week, the leading vote-getters, regardless of position are Frankfurt kicker RHYS LLOYD, Cologne running back DERRICK ROSS, Centurions center GREG ESLINGER, Cologne tight end BOBBY BLIZZARD and Galaxy wide receiver AARON HOSACK.
The All-NFLE team, along with Offensive and Defensive MVPs and Coach of the Year, will be announced during World Bowl week in Frankfurt, Germany.

Thunder desperate to give home fans victory to cheer
THEY came close against the Frankfurt Galaxy last weekend, but the Berlin Thunder ultimately fell to a fourth successive home defeat at Olympic Stadium.
And now, as they prepare for their final home game of the 2007 campaign, the Thunder is desperate to give the football fans of Berlin at least one victory to cheer.
Berlin is 0-4 at home this season and will be keen to avoid a clean sweep in front of their own fans when they take on the Rhein Fire on Friday evening.
Thunder head coach JOHN ALLEN paid tribute to the club's loyal fans, saying: "I want to thank our fans. In the last four home games they have been right there with us. This is their team and I'm extremely proud to be head coach of the Berlin Thunder.
"It's great to have the fans come out and support their team the way they do. We will move past the Frankfurt game and get ready to take on the Rhein Fire."
Berlin is not the only club to have problems on home soil this season. In fact, only the Frankfurt Galaxy (4-0) and Hamburg Sea Devils (3-1) have winning marks in front of their own fans.
Cologne has gone 1-3 at RheinEnergieStadion but remains in the thick of the World Bowl race thanks to an unbeaten 4-0 record on the road.
Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN says: "If I had an explanation for why we play poorly at home, I would have fixed it by now. We haven't played well here at home.
"Maybe the focus is better being away from all the distractions when we're on the road. I don't have an explanation for it."
There has been nothing to choose between home and road teams in 2007 as 12 games have been won by those playing in front of their own fans and 12 have been won by the visiting team.
NFLE FACTS:Turnover Kings
Taking care of the football has always been something pro football coaches love to preach. And you can see why as Frankfurt and Hamburg- leaders in terms of turnover ratios this season - also top the standings with 6-2 and 5-3 records respectively. Frankfurt has a turnover ratio of +8 having recorded a league-high 22 takeaways (15 interceptions, 7 fumbles) compared to 14 giveaways (7 interceptions, 7 fumbles). Hamburg ranks second with a ratio of +4 having recorded 13 takeaways (7 interceptions, 6 fumbles), while committing a league-low 9 giveaways (8 interceptions, 1 fumble). Berlin is currently last and also has a league-worst turnover ratio of -6.
Sea Devils use big plays to spark World Bowl challenge
THE ability to produce a big play can change a game in a heartbeat and provide a team with the necessary spark to record a victory.
One such team using big plays to good effect in 2007 is the 5-3 Hamburg Sea Devils, which leads NFL Europa with nine plays covering 40 yards or more.
Here is a look at how many plays of 40+ yards each team has produced this season:
Team 40+-yard plays
Through eight weeks of action, there have been a total of 41 plays covering 40 yards or more. At that current pace there would be 51 40+-yard plays in 2007. The record stands at 59 set last season.
Here is a look at the five longest plays in NFL Europa this season:
Player/Team Play Details
C. Barclay (Ber) 99-yd kickoff return TD
S. Mitchell (Fra) 81-yd interception return TD
Q. Griffin (Ham) 79-yd kickoff return
B. Middleton (Fra) 71-yd punt return TD

Frankfurt leads NFL Europa with 32 plays covering 20 yards or more, while the 2-6 Thunder Thunder ranks second with 27. Amsterdam has given up a league-high 32 plays of 20+ yards.
NFLE FACTS:Smith eyes record
JONATHAN Smith has scored 11 career touchdowns for the Amsterdam Admirals (2 in 2005 and 9 in 2007) and needs one more score to tie the club record of 12 touchdowns (Ruvell Martin, 2005).
