Fury FC Upset Indy with 1-0 Win
July 4, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - On Wednesday night, Fury FC visited Lucas Oil Stadium for the club's first matchup against Indy Eleven since 2016. Sticking to a clear game plan, Ottawa went in and stunned Indy with a 1-0 win, Fury FC's eight shutout of the season.
On the night, Head Coach Nikola Popovic fielded seven Canadians in his starting XI, picking from the 12 Canadians amongst the 18 players dressed for the match. As a unit, they offered another gritty performance, contributing to the positive result.
Ottawa took the lead in the 28th minute when they were awarded a free kick on the right flank of the attacking box. Haworth directed the ball towards the second post and Indy's defender Mitchell deflected it in for an own goal. On the other side of the pitch, Fury FC's Maxime Crépeau finished the night with four saves.
Ottawa Fury FC now heads home to host Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Sunday, July 8 at TD Place (1 p.m.) in the first of four consecutive home matches, including the much anticipated clash against MLS Toronto FC in Canadian Championship action (July 18). Fan can still purchase their tickets to come out and support at OttawaFuryFC.com/tickets, by calling or visiting the TD Place Box Office.
POST-GAME COMMENTS
Head Coach Nikola Popovic
"We have to be proud of the players. It was a very tough game for us, they [Indy] are perhaps of the best teams in the USL, so this makes our win even more important and satisfying."
On the tactical approach to the game... "It's everything. We have our own model, we have to come with a strategy, and we had to take into account that these guys have been playing games after games with all the travel. So as a coach, we have to take into consideration everything and create a strategy for the game. We tried to create a strategy that would be enough to win, and we're happy because at the end of the day, we were able to make a fantastic effort and get the win against a very good team."
