Fury FC Flips Past Charlotte with 4-1 Win
June 2, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA - After a draw away from home the weekend before, Fury FC was looking forward to take on Charlotte Independence at TD Place Stadium on Sunday afternoon and continue its unbeaten streak. With an action filled 4-1 win in front of its fans, now on a six-game unbeaten streak, Fury FC jumps to 4th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference.
Charlotte opened the score in the 14th minute off a corner kick headed in by Roberts. Fury FC regained control of the match after two quick consecutive goals in the 36th (Fall, assisted by Samb) and 37th minute (Samb). Samb added another goal to his tally in the early part of the second half before providing the determining pass on François' goal in the 90th minute.
STORYLINES
Fury FC's quick consecutive goals in the first half were the fastest two goals in the club's USL Championship time and equalled the two goals scored on September 22, 2015, against New York Cosmos when Ottawa scored in the 77th (NY own goal) and 78th minute (Heinemann).
Forward Mour Samb collected its 5th and 6th goals of the season and added two more assists. He now has a total of 10 points in Fury FC's 11 matches. He has also scored in the club's last four consecutive games, a first in Fury FC history.
In 11 matches this season, Fury FC has scored 16 times. In 32 league games last year, they had a total of 31 goals. With an average of 1.55 goals per match (a goal every 58.2 minutes played), Ottawa could be on pace to reach over 50 goals on the season.
Ottawa also has the 5th best goal differential in the Eastern Conference (+8) with at least one game in hand on most of its top 10 opponents.
Sunday's match official, Mathieu Souaré, a Canada Soccer national referee, is also a police officer, a fitting coincidence on a match honouring Ottawa-Gatineau's first responders.
POST-GAME COMMENTS
Head Coach Nikola Popovic
"We didn't start very well. In the first half we had some problems maintaining possession in their half. We always had more possession but we weren't able to control the game the way we want to control the game. In the second half we came out better and the goals helped us settle down and create even more chances. I think the 4-1 scoreboard is a good expression of what happened in the game."
Forward Mour Samb
"I feel confident. I work hard to score every game, and now God and my teammates have helped me do that. So I appreciate that and will continue to work to score every game."
"When I go (for the goal) I always think I'm going to make it. But I have to find the best solution on the pitch. The only time we know 100% the goals are going to come, is when I pass it over; that's why I sent that one to François because he was free. The last game in Bethlehem he had the assist on my goal, so now I'm just giving it back."
